I’m sure this is an easy problem for the experts to answer.  I’m not one to paint wood, but in this case I need to.  I’m making a bedside table for my granddaughter.  It’s made from (dare I say it....big box store pine).  The reason why I used this pine is because she wanted it painted...anyhow.  I know I can use something like Binz to keep the knots from bleeding through.  I don’t have any, but I do have some shellac.  Would that work?  Or would you recommend something better.

Anyway, regular shellac should work just fine for this. 

usually use a coat or two of Kilz primer, then whatever colour you want over that...

While there is great debate about oil based Kilz verses latex.  And of course the smell is an issue, I prefer OIL based for stuff outside.  It seals much better, my opinion only.

Shellac is the perfect sealer for knotty pine.   Original B-I-N was shellac-based, but since the price of shellac increased there are now versions that are "synthetic shellac" -- whatever that is.   Just go for the real stuff.  Read the label very carefully.  Or just go with SealCoat.  Finish is usually the cheapest part of the project and the most visible.
