July 23, 20196 yr Popular Post This is what is currently on my bench. I need to spend some time on it and knock it out....it's been stretched out too long. It is a giraffe shoulder blade going to be mounted on the tiger maple base it's pictured with. The base has no finish on it yet but has been stained. -Aaron
July 23, 20196 yr Oh my goodness! That is so cool! Where the heck do you purchase a Giraffe shoulder blade?

July 23, 20196 yr Man Aaron, I had no idea that market even existed, thanks for sharing your art and a source, very cool. Got a question, any foul smell while carving the bone?

Got a question, any foul smell while carving the bone? John,..your welcome. I'm a bone/antler addict,..if stuff like this is out there I'm probably gonna find it. As far as the smell goes,...overall I'd say very minimal. I carve in front of the box vent pictured,..so that helps with what little there is. Antler is pretty famous for emitting an odor while power carving,...I've done several of those. I would say it is worse than the bone,...at least this one. It is however more consistent to carve and more dense all the way through. Where the marrow was on the giraffe bone it is very porous with a heavy matrix. You are very challenged to hold detail in these areas. Of all the things I've carved,..moose antler is the most ideal....but I'm always gonna mix it up a bit. Live and learn.

July 23, 20196 yr I've got deer antler and moose antler, I'll post some pics of it all next time I get up to dad's place, I have it all stored up there. It's taking up space.

July 23, 20196 yr Beautiful work, Aaron. What tools, cutters, bits do you use? How do you get your colors? The rusty tin roof, in the last two you posted, is really neat.
July 23, 20196 yr Author Gene,..thanks. Tools are dremel and foredom rotary tools. Bits are round carbides of various sizes. Really pretty basic. Here's and earlier pic of the giraffe bone with the tools I use. The Mail Pouch Barn was painted with artist oils.

Usually use some reference to look at but I can't trace anything and have it turn out worth a darn....never could. It always ended up looking "stiff". I do some scrimshaw on powder horns,..most people teach carbon paper to be used to get the image on the horn before scratchin.....I can't do it that way..I gotta just figure out what I want...get a pencil,..sit down and do it.

January 16, 20251 yr Author Popular Post A progress pic..hadn't done much with it for a couple of years. I knocked back the ink on those leaves, didn;t like it so dark. I'm pretty much down to working on the deer. Everything else is thinned down as much as I want it.
October 26, 2025Oct 26 Author The carving has been done for a few weeks. I had a couple of small repairs to make and been working on attachment.
