A cascade of leaves bowl

I made this “Cascade of Leaves” bowl from Sapalee.  It measures about 11 inches across and has carved leaves all around.  It’s finished with two coats of walnut oil and three coats of a satin polyurethane.  It took me over 6 hours to carve this...

Pauley, that is very creative, did you turn the main bowl first then carve the leaves into it or is the entire bowl carved out? Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I turned the outside of the bowl first.  I left it on the chuck, but removed it from the lathe for the carving.  Then I put it back on the lathe and hollowed it out.  I took it off the lathe again and did some fine tuning on the carving.  Hand sanded for quite a while.  I wanted to try and do something like this because I have not seen this done before...so I gave it a shot.

Well for first try that came out excellent.  Very creative!!

Pauley I am assuming there is a light at the bottom of the bowl, to light up the flowers?

Good job Pauley. If you want to go a step farther look up a video about Dixie Biggs Demonstrates Relief Carving. it is in several parts.

Beautiful work.  I, too, am wondering what the electrical cord is for.

I like it.  Nicely done.

The cord is for the turn table the bowl,is sitting on.  I only use an iPad and when I tried to upload a video, I got a message saying it’s in the wrong format.  So I just uploaded the photo.

Thank you.  The electrical cord is for the turntable the bowl is sitting on.  I tried to upload a video to the forum here, but it gave me a message saying it’s in the wrong format.  So I just uploaded the photo.
