June 5, 20197 yr Popular Post Got time with my grandson on the lathe for the first time. We turned a platter together and the I textured and colored it. Used some pecan scraps. He had fun and we do a Pen tomorrow. After he left shop shop I did a test platter for finish test with wax on offering plates.
June 5, 20197 yr It is a wonderful feeling when some of your off spring tries to imitate their elders in the good stuff.

June 5, 20197 yr Cool platter with the grandson Gerald, and the finish looks good from here on your test platter also.
June 5, 20197 yr Nice day. A great experience for him even if he doesn't pursue it further. Let's hope he is intrigued.
June 8, 20197 yr Author Popular Post We did the Pen today. He did well but I am not a pen turner so not that much help. Watched a video this AM to refresh. the tongue thing is something he gets from his dad.
June 8, 20197 yr Popular Post That is awesome. And, yes, he is very satisfied. I hope he got the bug. BTW, when he gets a haircut, I could certainly use some.
June 8, 20197 yr Popular Post I'm happy to see that your grandson enjoyed turning. I introduced my grandson to it also. I showed him all the tools, safety devices and the lathe. We turned together, I was behind him helping him do it safely and easy. He seemed to enjoy it. That was 2 years ago and he has not mentioned it since. However as a computer coder and programmer, the things he loves..........he will make a lot more money. Maybe someday...........
June 8, 20197 yr I would call that a great day in the shop Gerald And the pen looks great! Hope he wants to turn a few more...

What a great time and the look of satisfaction on his face says it all. I as well hope he enjoyed it enough to keep it going, we need more youth in the "hands on" arts and crafts. Thanks for sharing this Gerald, now I've got something to show my son and say "see, he's doing it, now your turn!". Hey Gerald, were there any moments or surprises such as a catch here and there that made him pause?

No real surprises but he did scrub the bushings on the pen mandrel couple times. No worse than I would have done. We used SRG and scrapers for the whole thing . I showed him the skew but did not try that for this one. Maybe do something when I get off at 2.
June 8, 20197 yr Popular Post Looks like he had fun, and the pen looks great. Hope he sticks with it.
June 10, 20197 yr Popular Post I love seeing young kids taking up woodworking and turning is a plus. A lot better for them than playing with their phones.
