anything but MDF...

FJ pine is better than MDF and usually cheaper...

MDF is not structurally sound.....

Outside corners are prone to chipping....

It hates water..

It contains high levels of formaldehyde that can off gas for years...

This article may cause you to rethink using MDF...

As for hardwood, stained or clear coated but not painted..

way aesthetically better..

it adds value, beauty, a natural feel and luxury to your home...

it has the potential for many generations of hard use because of its durability and quality....

Exactly!  Sure you can paint it, and I have when asked for someone else.  It takes poly and after several coats can look good on the face.  But the edges, never.  Even tried packing them with bondo and yes they were smoother but nothing like the real deal.

Agree with what's been said.  While doing our home remodel I have been using FJP and making some trim myself (also pine) because everything else in the house is painted.

Thanks all I guess it comes to personal preference.  WE are going with Oak trim stained so the early grian is black and the late is brown.  The joints have to be perfect and that is what I am good at.
