January 5, 20197 yr What would be an easy 90 degree joint besides just screwing/nailing the two together at the ends (one overlapping the other)? Butt joints? I don't have a draw saw (whatever that japanese saw is called). I do have a jig saw and a hack saw.
January 5, 20197 yr Popular Post Decent Japanese pull saws are cheap at the BBs. But, not the fastest thing for lap joints...for a new user. But, way cheaper than a BS or TS. Wouldn't advise either of the two saws you mentioned. Most of the BB pull saws allow for interchangeable blades. You can get rip blades as well as several different cross cut blades. Get yourself one and a couple different blades. A little practice and you'll find you can easily cut your lap joints. Steve Newman uses a regular hand saw but, he's been doing it since Christ was a Corporal.
January 5, 20197 yr Popular Post pull saw... look for Ryoba or Dozuki style saws w/ teeth on both edges.. one edge is crosscut the other is rip... decent ones don't cost much... if you want a flex and stiff blade saws add a magnetic tool holder strip to the side of the blade... the strip will also act as a depth stop or gauge... I think you will be very happy w/ this saw... got a router??? the joints... half laps are easy..
January 5, 20197 yr Ma, what is the scope of the project? Where are you wanting to create a simple 90degree joint?
January 5, 20197 yr Popular Post I'll probably be banned from this site forever, but, pocket screws are an option.

Depending on the scope/purpose of your project, pocket holes will work and give you a strong joint too... Kreg Jig or Milescraft 200 I've read good reviews on the Milescraft. Kreg offers a variety of option above the one linked. I have the Kreg K-4; bought it off CL for $25...had been used once. Plenty of You-tube videos on how to use both.

January 5, 20197 yr Just now, Grandpadave52 said: pocket holes will work and give you a strong joint too... w/ splines... pocket holes don't do well over time and under stress.. ie.. the table apron to leg joint fastened only w/ glue and pocket screws only... move the table every so often... one or two drags and you'll toast the joint(s)... make your own PH jig... pocket-hole-jig1.pdf

January 5, 20197 yr Author Popular Post I'm wanting to make a concealed flag cabinet. Basically a small shelf where the Union opens, the upper stripes open like cabinets, and the lower stripes drop down like a small shelf. So you can hide valuables and/or weapons, etc.
January 6, 20197 yr Popular Post Ma, with your present tools, a lap joint would likely be the easiest...with a pull saw. Its a solid joint, too. Especially if you pin it.
January 6, 20197 yr Popular Post Here's a nice video showing one man's method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfXmFErs9J0 Paul Sellers also shows it in a video, but a part of doing something else and I can't find it at the moment.
January 12, 20197 yr Keith Mealy posted a link on finishing.. after chasing sub links I thought you might want to have a look see.. Here's the home page... Here's articles on joinery...
January 12, 20197 yr Popular Post Well, pocket screws would work fine. I’m pretty sure this is what he is wanting to build. Frame could be pocket screwed and the striped sections edge jointed or just taped and painted. The field is just cut from plywood and painted. A nice project.
