December 27, 20187 yr Haven't figured out how to send a pic, and the last two times I put this question out, someone deleted it. I cannot find anyone who knows anything about this oddity of a small cast iron wood plane. It has an enclosure for wood shavings, and the top is hinged at the rear. right at the rear is the slot and a cutter blade. The enclosure catches the shavings, and you have to raise the lid to empty them. It has no name or any other identifying marks. It is about 5" long, and the antique store I found it at had a string and tag identifying it as an "antique wood lathe." So, the owner of the store did not know what it was. Two people have tried to find one on the internet with no success. Thought some of you might know a little about it. Just because I don't have a picture of it doesn't mean you have a right to delete it for the third time!
December 27, 20187 yr I can’t imagine why the image or post would have been removed without an explanation. The only thing I can think of is the post may have been moved to a different forum. Try posting the image again. It really would make identifying the plane easier.
December 27, 20187 yr You have given the perfect description of a vintage ice shaver. Our family has used these all my life to make our own snow cones at summer family outings. We called them snow balls. Take one of these and a block of ice and you're good to go. There is a family recipe for making the flavors too. Enjoyed them at two family picnics this past summer.
December 27, 20187 yr So sorry you are having issues with posting Woodie, as the others have said, there is absolutely no reason why your topic would have been deleted, and there is absolutely no reason to delete your topic just because it does not contain images, perhaps you can just give me a rough timeline when you submitted the last two topics for this subject, I may be able to see what happened. Thanks Woodie!

I believe you nailed it. Found interesting this image you posted Dan...North Bros Mfg Co. Guess they looked for market niches back then too. They were more noted for their Yankee trade mark name for push drill, spiral/plain screwdrivers, egg beater style drills and the like until bought out by Stanley. I'll bet if one has the below, they have quite the collector item. Thanks.
December 27, 20187 yr I'm not sure which brand they are. There are many versions. They must have been popular back in the day and now it is hard to even find block ice. We have to freeze our own when needed. My grandfather moved the family to Philadelphia but it was early and I don't think they would have been purchased at that time. There were 10 in my dads family and every family had a shaver. Both of my brothers have one but we are not sure what happened to dad's.
December 27, 20187 yr These two I bought about the last of my old plane hunting days. The guy had a flat bed trailer rounded over with junk. I pulled one out and held it up and he said 6 each or both for 10. It took us ten minutes of looking and finally found the second one. Collectors items all right but around me there ain't many who collect old wood working and ice working tools.. Hand planes around here at auctions which mostly are farm equipment or house hold items just hardly ever get a bid for old planes. I still go to auctions and will buy old planes but only if it is a different number or style than what I already have...I also have 12 draw knives, and some maybe call them something else and all built by a different manufacture. I'm not too much in knowing what things all called.
December 30, 20187 yr I'm pretty sure that you can still buy the ice shaves. I used to see them all of the time in antique stores and flea markets (especially here, south of the Mason-Dixon Line) https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Block-Ice-Shaver-HEAVY-DUTY-Hand-Cast-Aluminum-Snow-Cones-Raspador-de-Hielo/323493546973?hash=item4b51b7cbdd:g:23AAAOSwSflblxYv:rk:14:pf:0 Edited December 30, 20187 yr by schnewj

The old ones were cast.

We use a plastic container. The longer the run for the shaver the better. The ice dumps right out of it like a large ice cube.
