I moved your post to the tools etc. forum. Hope that's ok.

  I should have thought about it was a tool

what does the spring bring to the party?

It is on the underside of the back side of the drawer.  Pushing down all the time against the lock, in this case a piece of 1/4 plate steel.  When you full extend the drawer the lock drops into place via spring pressure.  Until you pull up the knob to retract the lock it stays put.  It probably would stay without the spring.  This just makes sure if gravity one day fails it doesn't come get me.

You come up with some really great ideas for your shop and methods to maximize your space. Really appreciate you sharing all aspects of what, why & how you accomplish your solutions.

I really enjoy reading this "idea" posts. Thanks!

Used a brake shoe retaining spring to push the 1/4 metal plate down.

Good to have someone else here admit they hoard 'er scavenge & re-purpose every imaginable item possible...now where did put all of those old brake springs, adjusters and other parts I've saved?:WonderScratch:

Mine are in a plastic coffee can up in the joists, right near the table saw. You'd be surprised at some of the things I hang on to.
