All of the Sears tools have been made by various manufacturers. They did not come along with the name purchase. Stanley, apparently, got a lot of the OEM's on board, and are apparently trying to get the others or a replacement for them. It looks like they plan on carrying through on the lifetime warranties but there are some problems that need to be ironed out. Remember Sears was the only vendor for the longest time (until the last few years). They had a built in system to exchange and return defective items. With Stanley now owning the name, they are relying on various vendors to market the items. Those vendors are not going to absorb the cost of exchange, storage, transport, etc. like Sear had built into their system. Stanley will have to compensate their vendors in some manner to act as their agents for the exchange. When they get it all ironed out, we'll see if they are any better then Sears has been for the past few decades. It really appears, that, Stanley is doing everything in their power to revitalize the Craftsman name. I guess the end of next year will indicate whether or not the Craftsman name survives as we knew it.

My take on it is that Stanley bought the name to make money on it , riding on the built up reputation with DIYers. They will bid it out to off shore manufactures, give it some kind of warrentee that is hard to fill,i.e. Mail it back to a central location only on Sundays, with all the paper work including the canceled check and your mothers maiden name, by unreimbursed shipping, and a signed, notarized affidavid that it wasn't used on a daily basis,or left out in the rain or at night with the lights on, or transported in any kind of electric/hybrid vehicle to the post office etc.etc. The same item will be built by different manufacturers. You will be better off to buy Harbor Freight. Thats my guess, Herb

December 23, 20187 yr For your average DIY'er you just do not need the super quality they sell you. Lifetime warranty is great if say you are a Mechanic and use them everyday, hard, rough and abusively. (Not talking about your ex wife so settle down) Now you want absorbent prices for a set of screwdrivers SnapOn has a set for $400, 22 different ones in all. Yeah, I choked on that one people.

Back in the 70's, when I worked as a mechanic to put myself through college, I bought a 10 piece screwdriver set for $25. I bought a second set for a Christmas present for my father. Other than replacing several handles (they used a bad batch of plastic) I still use them (both sets) almost every day. The most used ones hang on the wall at the general use bench in the garage. $400 for a 22 piece set is a far cry from that price 50 years ago. I can't believe it is just inflation, but who knows! I finally stopped buying Snap-on (except for some specialty tools) when I realized the other full time mechanic had the largest tool box Snap-on made, full of $10,000 worth of Snap-on tools, and was in hock up to his eyeballs. ( a LOT of money in 1970's dollars) I was doing the same jobs that he was with a few hundred dollars worth of Craftsman, Protos, and a couple of other brands. As for warranty...good luck. If you aren't a customer of the local truck franchisee, then you're out of luck. I have one of my screw drivers that needs a new handle and they won't replace it. The Snap-on CS, says, "talk to the local dealer". The local dealer refused to honor the warranty.

Sadly they get away with it. A previous dealer gave me a hard time about some warranty items. Long ago I paid off my original investment so only carried a small truck account balance to keep the guy coming every week. In his mind I didn't "buy enough". Sent a letter with a picture of my box and copy of several accounts I had paid in full over the years. Asked them if they wanted the exposure in the news or hey just honor what you say. He was less than pleased, BUT did what he had to do. Made such a fuss about it I quit buying anything from him. Made a point to always have a Matco catalog in my hands when he came by.
January 7, 20197 yr Many years ago I learned all about warranty --parts from and about Sears. After that experience my new rule is-was "don't buy any Sears machine with a cord" Still is.
