November 4, 20187 yr Popular Post Built the table back in the Pole Barn Shop days...about 2012, or so....Starting point was a 13" wide plank of Sycamore, and a few white Oak rafter parts, complete with nails.. To get a decently straight plank for the top, had to rip it down a bit, to remove wane, and the tapered edge....Saved some of the ripped parts for breadboard ends. Table traveled around, a while. Finish at the time was just a flood coat of Golden Oak stain...never got a coat of varnish... While moving things around the other day...table came in from the foyer...needing a good clean up... Been sitting a while? Broom to evict the squatters.. Then a wipe down to try to get rid of the dirt & dust. Apron edges were from old oak rafters...outside edges were rounded over..with a block plane.. Trim was notched to fit around the leg. They were mitered at the outside corner. I was going to thin the breadboard end pieces..never got around to it. Was a bit afraid they might fall apart.... Those flat trim pieces? They acted like a sponge..soaked up 6 coats of varnish, today...black holes were from old cut nails. Trim was just glued and nailed in place.. Legs and stretchers were ripped from those old rafters...Mortise and tenons at the corners. So..everything now has a coat of clear gloss varnish.. Maybe a better look? Just some old barn wood....

November 5, 20187 yr Author Besides the plank....there were 6 x 6 beams of Sycamore....aprons may have come from one of those.
November 11, 20187 yr Author Popular Post When this table was made, I was working out of a Pole Barn Shop...out near Pemberton, OH....see if I can pull up a few scenes from that place... The tablesaw I used to have...did a LOT of work, both with it...and on it... Still have this table. Here it had a lathe, a drill press, a Monarch vise ( beltsander to sharpen on), the Craftsman grinder. and the Craftsman 12", 3 wheel bandsaw. Blue door thingy is a router table...had to move the herd IF I wanted to use it. Had a dovetail template I could attach to the far end, and buzz out drawers. Some of the other toys hanging on the wall. Was a bit less tidy, back then... At the other end of the "bench". That is my old Dovetail jig. Chopsaw is the Pole Barn owners. Jig is sitting on a spindle sander he built. Pole barn had two bandsaws, mine and his. Mine has a round file chucked up...for what, I have no idea. Barn was a large one. The concrete floor only took up half of the barn....Shop took up half of the floored space, and an enclosed "Game Room" ( with heat!) took up the other half of the floored area. It did have a "loft" above the room....storage, mainly......Was NOT a year round shop....unless you liked "Frost Nibbles" on you. Summer time, you could open both of the big doors up, and get a decent cross breeze. Any rainstorms that came through....you needed earplugs. Metal roof was NOISEY! A lot of work got done out here...had a time-share on the tools with the owner....May try to find a few other "shots" of the place...sometime. The Middle section of the bench...on the other side of this wall, was the Game Room Thanks for looking in.
