November 1, 20187 yr Popular Post Ok....downtime IN the shop....taking a short vacation from woodworking projects, for now. Bench was cleared off, planed flat Even a coat of shellac on the bare wood. The plane lying on the bench came from the Wapak Gathering....came home in a pink plastic tub. i thought maybe I could clean it up a bit...and see IF I can make it a little bit better than a junker plane. "Whale Tail" Stanley Defiance. Made between 1955 and 1962....when Stanley crimped the lateral lever down tighter.. Named because it looks like the south end of a north bound whale. Rear handle....may see about rounding it over a little bit better. Hmmm, yeah...need to clean under the hood, looks like? Get the frog to seat better. Flatten the face of the frog, so the iron fits better...the "hood"? Clean the lever cap from this plane, and a spare cap I had on hand. Stanley on the right, Millers Falls Mohawk-Shelburne on the left. Stanley had a big chip-out missing along the leading edge..dead-center....it will still work, but..I also ground things back to remove the chip-out....reason the Millers falls one MIGHT get used? Because it has that piece of spring steel. Keeps the lever from digging into the chipbreaker. The Stanley one never had it, made for a cheaper part..but also a looser fit.. Somehow, I don't think this is the OEM bolt.....I don't had the correct one in the spares box....will work on this thing.. And work on this side, as well...grinder was fired up, again.. The reason these bolts have a flat head? There is a "well" in the frog, where the bolt usually sits...not a whole lot of room in there, either. Too tall of a bolt, and the iron can rock side to side. As for the other side.. Ground flush. These bolts protrude up under the lever cap....again, too tall and things can rock and wiggle.... Stamped as a Defiance, Made in USA. Will work on a sharpening, later... Have this piece of oak as a test track....mainly along the edge grain. I put the plane back together, using the freshly worked on parts...no sharpening was done, new lever cap was used. Set the test track into the vise, and gave the plane a test drive... Took a few tries...adjusted for depth, until it started to cut. It's a start....will be working on this Defiance tool, and another one.. Defiance 1-1/2" wide socket chisel....dead ringer for the Stanley version. About the bench top....had a wooden dog stuck in one of the dog holes...was unable to extract it, or even just drive it on through....so..I drill a new hole..a bit closer to the vise.. PEXTO No. 8012, 12" sweep, Samson chuck. Plane beside it? It is an older version of the Defiance planes, a #3 size. May try to get it working, as well. Drill got put back in the til.. There is a larger brace right next to it....a 14" sweep. Squares...a plough plane, and 3 spokeshaves...there is even a saw set in there.... Stay tuned...we'll see how that "Junker Plane" turns out.....

November 2, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok....at a stand still, for now. A replacement rear handle was found....and also was cracked....cleaned the joint, spread some glue. Used the bolt that holds the handle in place on the plane...and a pair of clamps... Called a Dungeon for a reason... And it be running across....right over to the drain....at least they sloped the floor correctly... Tools for this little operation? Old Craftsman 6" Grinder....needed the wire wheel more than the stone one...just in case, though.. I can dress the wheel to keep it square...next.. Drill press, with a small wire cup...have two other types I can use... Little one can get into all the nooks and crannies...wheel, I can hold a part on it's side, to get along the inside edges, next.. Used both the belt, and the disc....Other toys? Sharpening stones ( had a 3rd one to use) Visegrips to hold onto small parts...hate when a bolt or washer goes Airborne! And.. A very LARGE screwdriver....bolts don't want to argue with this one.... So...a square to check the iron, in case I need to grind a new edge... Another problem with irons that sit too long...they get a curve to them....I want to start out flat, so A few "taps" with this 32 oz hammer, was soon flat as can be...we do not mess around... Next, the 6" disc sander.... This is about as far as I go, in flattening the back of a plane's iron....then I spent a bit of time, getting the chipbreaker to sit gap-free....had a small problem. The cured part of the chipbreaker was a bit worn, and no longer could reach the iron....clamped it into the vise, same hammer to add a bit more curve....then sander, to refine the fit...and it is now gap-free. Then time to sharpen the iron a bit.. Jig to set a 25 degree angle, tighten the jig with the screwdriver, so it won't move...This is the first stone, a coarse oil stone...then step up a bit.. #2 stone is a 600 grit Medium India stone. the switch to a 1000 grit stone. All out of the higher grit papers...so the iron went to the strop...went done, a thumbnail got trimmed. Assembled to the chipbreaker, and set aside...half done... Removed the bolts and the wheel from the frog....then it went for a spin on the 6" disc sander. Frog sits on a pair of rails, and across the front edge...covered in rough paint, of course...same sander.. Nice, clean, and flat....will have to do the same with the base.... Handles were removed...had to go back and finish that one rail...May add a coat of Black Semi-gloss to some of these plain areas...and tape off the ones I want clear.. Sole took a ride on the beltsander.. Not sure about those scratches....may give this one more ride...seems to be flat, though...sides? They have a slight toe-in at the top, which is fine, as this won't be a shooting plane....Bolts? I grip these with the visegrips, save the fingers, and keeps parts from flying around the shop. Wheel may get changed out for a solid brass one. Whale Tail has been crimped down, into a type 20 style.. Yeah..after all the complaints about the Whale Tail...Stanley soon did the very same thing... So..waiting on a glue up, and a can of black spray paint...Hopefully the floor dries out, tomorrow....I can finish this "junker" out, as a Type 20, No. 4 Stanley...have to wait and see how it does as a smoother. Stay tuned...

Yes, I've used both too...the epoxy/appliance version gives more of the Japanning look, a bit more durable plus the anti-rust characteristics. I've also used the black hammered on some for something unique. Just a suggestion to consider. Everybody has their own preference.
November 2, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Well...LONG night..got back from the ER about 0400 this morning...Left hand was getting Shingles started.....more pills to take... Handle came out of the clamps...wasn't all that great...tried a coat of the Black paint....meh.. Hiding behind the Junior jack...was doing a photo shoot on Jack planes..looked around for a better handle.. Same Oak test track as when I started. Plane tries to roll the shavings up into Moxxon TP... tall knob out front, Brass wheel...crimped down whale tail.... Picked up some wet-or-dry papers today....may not need them? They go up to 2500 grit. May call this one ...done? yes, I even painted the bare spots...and a thumb..and a finger...

November 4, 20187 yr even after i had shingles the first time i got the zostavax and just this year i got my two shingrix shots. the new stuff is supposed to last longer to help prevent another attack. once you had the chickenpox you have the virus forever and i can tell you my outbreaks weren't fun either. hope you're doing better.
December 24, 20196 yr You will find that the appliance paint is some very good paint... Look into some Colloidal silver water for your shingles. I have a friend that makes that stuff.
