Wet your hands with cold water, shake off the excess, and press the goop down into the pan. Use a rolling pin to get it nice and flat, then bake it about 10 minutes in a warm oven. Take it out, let it cool off a bit, then cut it into bars with a rolling pizza cutter before it gets too hard. Wrap in waxed paper. Keeps forever. Optional: Add sugar-coated (red) peanuts if you like for taste, other dried fruits like banana chips, pineapple, Dried Apricots cut in small bits, Dried Papaya cubes. You get th plan.... The higher the fruit content in the total ratio, the faster the stuff will boost energy--but the faster the sugar crash afterwards. The higher the nut and seed content in the total ratio, the longer the stuff will keep you going. Add Bakers unsweetened chocolate chips for winter travel; (1/3 part by weight) Do not add 'yogurt' covered raisins (it's really white chocolate) in hot weather; the coating melts and makes a horrible mess. Notes: For homemade granola bars, take 3 cups of the same GORP mix I gave you earlier, add 6 cups of rolled oats (Quaker Regular oatmeal, the kind that takes 10-12 minutes to cook) that you have dry-roasted in a 400° oven on a big flat baking sheet for about 15 minutes, and mix in a half cup of vegetable oil, a handful of coconut flakes, ½ cup of brown sugar, 2 tsp. of vanilla extract, and about 1½ cups of honey. Adjust the honey quantity so that the whole mess is very sticky but still solid. It should be hard but not impossible to stir with a big wooden spoon.
