I used a scorp for the first two sculpted rockers I made, only because it's all I had at the time, for that style of chair it wasn't right, I purchased a right angle grinder and used it to dish out my rocker seats and things went smoother, now I am delving into hand made Windsors, the scorp is coming back out, getting excited, tooling up for Windsors! Can't wait to carve out my first seat.

October 20, 20187 yr Popular Post Best get started now, John. You don't want to be engaged in that much sweaty work in the summer time.
October 20, 20187 yr Author Studying the Windsor craft and reading up on it, the specific one I need and want is the Barr scorp as pictured above, hollow ground and dimensioned for tighter forms and specifically for the style of seat I am going to work on. I know it's a little pricey, but it's the go too for chair makers. https://barrtools.com/product/mike-dunbar-style-scorp-516-x-1-14-x-4/ The scorp I have is a general use shave, great at hogging anything out of everything, but lacking in chair seat shaping, when I first tried it on my sculpted rockers, I got frustrated, after reading up on them, I realized it wasn't me, it was the wrong tool for the job. Since I am new at Windsors Stick, I'd be a little hesitant veering off the beaten path with tools not recommended by other chair makers, once I get a good feel for the art of Windsors, I'll be able to branch out and customize for my own needs in tools and I can fiddle around, and I may purchase one of those you linked me too. But for now, this rookie Windsor guy needs to stay with tried and proven, I don't need more frustrations! Stand by Stick, I'll be hitting you up for a support group when things aren't going right! I know you're a chair-maker from back in the day, stay tuned!

Hey, the "How To" videos have the Windsor guys completing a chair from felling of the tree to finish, in about 45 minutes! I should be able to do it in two hours flat!

To my uninformed/unenlightened mind, I thought it was some form of a medieval torture device. ( Yeah I got no idea where these thoughts come from )
