October 14, 20187 yr I have been in contact with Shelix about getting snipe for a little over a year now. They tell me that they know they have a problem and are working on it. You guys that have a DW735 and are getting snipe with a Shelix cutter head please help and call Shelix and maybe we can put a little pressure on them. If you have fixed the problem please please post the fix. http://www.byrdtool.com/shelix
October 14, 20187 yr @Gene Howe, didn't you just upgrade to a Shelix head? Just curious if you are experiencing the same problems.
October 14, 20187 yr I have the head. Not installed yet. I bought the OEM size, not the smaller one. The tear down and installation...for me...is going to take some time. I'll probably get to it after the wife has her operation.
October 14, 20187 yr Author I bought the Shelix cutter head sometime before Christmas last year and started getting snipe again. I had snipe with the OEM blades and found a way to get rid of it. I will post a link below on how it's done below. http://www.woodcentral.com/bparticles/planer_setup.pdf

Just follow the instructions.
October 14, 20187 yr Thanks, Don. Which size did you install? It's hard, for my non mechanical brain, to understand how the head could cause snipe. Especially, if the new head is the OEM size. The smaller one might, due to it not matching the feed rollers distance from the wood.

Maybe the new head is slightly larger diameter than the old and the rollers aren't low enough to overcome that.

October 14, 20187 yr @hawkeye10 Don Have you tried making a sled and planing a board and see if it still gives a snipe? Also some guys eliminates the snipe by mounting a 3'-4' 3/4" board on the bed with a cleat on the bottom in the middle, this allows even support front and back for the board being planed, and eliminates snipe.

Maybe too much pressure? 6 minutes ago, Dadio said: @hawkeye10 Don Have you tried making a sled and planing a board and see if it still gives a snipe? That's what I have in mine, now. It's a 4' piece of pre laminated shelving from Lowes. One cleat on the infeed side. Works great with the blades in there now. We'll see when the Shelix is running. Or, maybe Don will try it first.
October 14, 20187 yr My new Cutech planer has Spiral cutters ,not helix, and it doesn't seem to snipe with factory settings. But when I feed it, I use a little up pressure to support in and out, just from habit of when I helped my Dad plane lumber on the old Parks planer. Herb

October 27, 20187 yr Author I got an email from Byrd this week telling me how to fix the snipe problem on my DW735. Check out the link below and if you need help just let me know. Edited October 27, 20187 yr by hawkeye10

They told me about the shimming trick a long time ago but when me and others still have snipe they went back to work on it. Even tho I still get snipe, it's not bad snipe and I would still buy the Shellac cutter head. Maybe you won't have to worry about snipe as some don't have snipe.
