September 14, 20187 yr I am looking seriously at falling into the wood turning vortex in the near future. I want to buy my 2nd lathe 1st. I have been watching CL for several months and the majority in my area for sale are either midis or ancient, so I am looking at maybe going with a new machine. Trying to get the most bang for my buck I am looking at the G0838 or the G0766. I don't currently anticipate doing a lot of spindle work so I think the shorter bed would be OK. Apparently the 0838 is fairly new so I am not finding a lot of reviews online. Would appreciate any comments from those that might have one or the other machine and what I might miss by going with the 0838 vs the 0766 and is it worth the extra $500? Thank you in advance for your insight
September 19, 20187 yr First, sorry you haven't received any responses to this post. I don't have any experience with either of these 2 lathes. If you expect to be turning really large diameter bowls, over the bed or long stuff, then the 766 looks like the choice to make. The electrical specs are slightly different so that might be a concern for your shop wiring. I didn't see a bed extension listed for the shorter lathe, but Grizzly may have one, just in case you would opt for the smaller lathe and then want to "upgrade". My lathe is an older Delta iron bed with a 14" swing and about 42" max length. Other than the Reeve's Drive, it is a very serviceable machine. It only has a 1hp motor but rarely has that been a problem. I am going to include this thread in today's (Sept. 19) "Wednesday's Wisdom..." and hopefully that will generate some more responses.
September 19, 20187 yr John I have some first hand experience with the G0766 lathe. I was very happy with it. I only had it for about 1-1/2 years but I worked it hard. The fit and finish I thought was excellent, and Grizzly customer service was outstanding. It was a good choice for me. Hope that helps.
September 19, 20187 yr Not much difference in motors, 15 vs 20a. If it was me and I could afford either one I would go with the larger one.
September 19, 20187 yr Author Thanks everyone, I appreciate your input. Lew there is an extension for the 838 for $127. That of course narrows the cost gap between the two machines.
September 22, 20187 yr John, it looks like the 25% tariff is going to get you. I would just wait because our president will fix it before long.
