backsaw.jpg.d1532227fe6a02c9ed16b3ff15835788.jpg

$3 saw.    And, for a $1 donation, a big glass of ice water...Long, humid day...."dogs" are barking, right now...

Interesting, maybe not much to get.  But the tractors were cool looking.

Surprised you didn't get rained out for part of it...radar showed a pretty large rain front in that general area around NOON. It looked like @Fred W. Hargis Jr got rain again today too.

Lot of "hit-n-miss" engines there. I'm going to guess that 3500 lb gvw trailer in the first picture was nearly maxed out?

Good mix of tractors in the picture...maybe an F-12 McCormick, some old Cases, a couple of Cockshutts, possible a 40 or 50 wide front Deere ("Johnny Popper")...love old tractors, now:P

Quite a mix of vendors it appears...Pretty good variety of tools too...like most festivals or open air flea markets, most tools are priced priced above true market value...sometimes a bargain or two to be had.

I'd say you did alright though...best bargain of the days was the big glass of ice water, right?:D

Rest up, Monday would be a good day to go back...bargains always to be had on the last day^_^

Had sprinkles off and on....seemed a lot of the showers were just missing the place...

Food trucks and other food vendors.....$$$$$...sheeesh.    Best to eat something before and after you go there...

There is this HUGE Walnut tree, with a few benches sitting around it......IF you can find a spot to sit.....nice, cool spot to stop for a bit....had a nice breeze under the tree, along with a few Walnut nuts on the ground to walk on....

That one vendor that sets up with all the tents & tables filled with tools, that I look for each year?   Wasn't there, this year....not sure why.

The rain was real spotty in the area yesterday, we had a cloud burst that dumped .8" of rain in about 20 minutes, then we were dry for the rest of the day. Watching the news last night it seemed the rain was hit and miss everywhere, just be glad you didn't get our downpour.

  • Author

Had one of those downpours, once I got back home...BIG drops, and LOTS of them....for 10 minutes....then nothing...

The Stanley No. 82 has been cleaned up....blade is a "Work-in-Progress" as I am rather new to sharpening such items....and there are a couple "dings" along the edge.

Will post a few photos..when the other two "things" are cleaned up, and presentable to Polite Company....

Steve, how, and for what is that 82 used? How sharp does it need to be? It wouldn't need a burr turned, would it?

  • Author

About the same things as a card scraper, or a Stanley No. 80.    Bevel the edge to a single 45 degree....then turn a hook over from the bevel...

IF I ever get it sharpened.....I can use it instead of sandpaper on flat areas....

Far be it from me to give a master like you advice so, consider this a VOE (from one who has far less E than you).

It's really easy to get a burr if you flatten the edge pretty flat. On thin scrapers, I use a file. On thicker ones, a grinder. In fact, on the thick scrapers, I dont even bother with turning the edge. The grinder alone produces a decent burr. A heavy grind on an undamaged edge isn't necessary. I use a light touch.

Ok, will try that.

Because I am thinking this one will need a whole new edge....cleaned up well, though..

Maybe after the shop cools off...I can get the  Stanley 945-8 cleaned up....we'll see.

Steve, that's a lot thinner than I thought. Maybe the traditional file and burnish will be the way to go. To get a straight, flat edge, I put the file in the bench vise, it has 1" thick wood faces, and run the scraper against the file with the scraper face flat on the edge of the wood face.

Jaws on mine are a bit thicker

May drag out the Wentworth No. 1....and set it up....and use the saw vise to hold the blade.     First, I need to get rid of a few "dings" along the edge....almost like they had scraped over a nail....

May after supper, get the brace cleaned up....and see about re-doing the edge.    Basically, it is just a shorter version of the one a Stanley #80 uses.

Wentworth No. 1  ( wonder it he knew J.G.?)  Used the file to joint a new edge, and remove the dings....Then file at a 45, then a big round screwdriver shaft to turn the burr...600 grit oil stone to smooth things down a bit...test drive?

1019391621_testdrive.jpg.39fcda087ebfcc20d16ffcd366b66bab.jpg

getting there...may try again....I did have on the "cut-proofs"

gloves.jpg.095ce0f738f3ce4c04d397c8cb55ec2c.jpg

As I don't need any more cuts.   I think that will do for one day?
