September 1, 20187 yr Popular Post Labor Day Weekend, means I travel to West Liberty, OH. at least once, or twice....why? And there were bigger ones, and they were even running.. This little red things was running... So was this one....but these other two... Were not. There were a few tractors, sitting around.. The rest of the tractors were getting set up for the Parade.... The Magic Bus? Hmmm, no tools here.... Nope, no tools here... Not much here... getting warmer? pan to the right a bit.. The word here was...OUCH! The one big plough plane? $80....The Stanley #80? $20... Didn't need any of these...things...nor.. Any of these...I even turned down a Stanley Handyman #4....moving along... I did find one item in this pile...but not much else... Not much here, to look at..tool-wise.. Lathe & tools..$150...same price for the saw....didn't even look at the stand... $10 Stanley No. 82... $1 Stanley No. 945 and.. $3 saw. And, for a $1 donation, a big glass of ice water...Long, humid day...."dogs" are barking, right now...
September 2, 20187 yr Surprised you didn't get rained out for part of it...radar showed a pretty large rain front in that general area around NOON. It looked like @Fred W. Hargis Jr got rain again today too. Lot of "hit-n-miss" engines there. I'm going to guess that 3500 lb gvw trailer in the first picture was nearly maxed out? Good mix of tractors in the picture...maybe an F-12 McCormick, some old Cases, a couple of Cockshutts, possible a 40 or 50 wide front Deere ("Johnny Popper")...love old tractors, now Quite a mix of vendors it appears...Pretty good variety of tools too...like most festivals or open air flea markets, most tools are priced priced above true market value...sometimes a bargain or two to be had. I'd say you did alright though...best bargain of the days was the big glass of ice water, right? Rest up, Monday would be a good day to go back...bargains always to be had on the last day
September 2, 20187 yr Author Had sprinkles off and on....seemed a lot of the showers were just missing the place... Food trucks and other food vendors.....$$$$$...sheeesh. Best to eat something before and after you go there... There is this HUGE Walnut tree, with a few benches sitting around it......IF you can find a spot to sit.....nice, cool spot to stop for a bit....had a nice breeze under the tree, along with a few Walnut nuts on the ground to walk on.... That one vendor that sets up with all the tents & tables filled with tools, that I look for each year? Wasn't there, this year....not sure why.
September 2, 20187 yr The rain was real spotty in the area yesterday, we had a cloud burst that dumped .8" of rain in about 20 minutes, then we were dry for the rest of the day. Watching the news last night it seemed the rain was hit and miss everywhere, just be glad you didn't get our downpour.
September 2, 20187 yr Author Had one of those downpours, once I got back home...BIG drops, and LOTS of them....for 10 minutes....then nothing... The Stanley No. 82 has been cleaned up....blade is a "Work-in-Progress" as I am rather new to sharpening such items....and there are a couple "dings" along the edge. Will post a few photos..when the other two "things" are cleaned up, and presentable to Polite Company....
September 2, 20187 yr Steve, how, and for what is that 82 used? How sharp does it need to be? It wouldn't need a burr turned, would it?
September 2, 20187 yr Author About the same things as a card scraper, or a Stanley No. 80. Bevel the edge to a single 45 degree....then turn a hook over from the bevel... IF I ever get it sharpened.....I can use it instead of sandpaper on flat areas....
September 2, 20187 yr Far be it from me to give a master like you advice so, consider this a VOE (from one who has far less E than you). It's really easy to get a burr if you flatten the edge pretty flat. On thin scrapers, I use a file. On thicker ones, a grinder. In fact, on the thick scrapers, I dont even bother with turning the edge. The grinder alone produces a decent burr. A heavy grind on an undamaged edge isn't necessary. I use a light touch.
September 2, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok, will try that. Because I am thinking this one will need a whole new edge....cleaned up well, though.. That knurled bolt has a lot of writing on it....for Stanley Rule & Level Co. of New Britain CONN USA PAT. No. 1-29-07.....Jan. 29, 1907 This thing... Has a Keystone in the medallion...and is a Warranted Superior....the "Before" Need to add a finish to the handle.. Even "clocked" the slots.. Maybe after the shop cools off...I can get the Stanley 945-8 cleaned up....we'll see.
September 2, 20187 yr Steve, that's a lot thinner than I thought. Maybe the traditional file and burnish will be the way to go. To get a straight, flat edge, I put the file in the bench vise, it has 1" thick wood faces, and run the scraper against the file with the scraper face flat on the edge of the wood face.
September 2, 20187 yr Author Jaws on mine are a bit thicker May drag out the Wentworth No. 1....and set it up....and use the saw vise to hold the blade. First, I need to get rid of a few "dings" along the edge....almost like they had scraped over a nail.... May after supper, get the brace cleaned up....and see about re-doing the edge. Basically, it is just a shorter version of the one a Stanley #80 uses.
September 3, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Supper was late....had a "visitor" in the shop... Usually, it moves a little faster...tonight...wasn't quite fast enough. hauled the brace to the shop.. Took apart what I could....found something I don't usually see... These jaws still had their spring. Wire wheels of all sorts... Look any better? Got to looking over at the drill til.... Yep, now have "twins" in the shop... At least I can tell what they are... They wanted you to know who made these... even says so on the chuck.. Made [ STANLEY] in USA....and then I got out this toy... Wentworth No. 1 ( wonder it he knew J.G.?) Used the file to joint a new edge, and remove the dings....Then file at a 45, then a big round screwdriver shaft to turn the burr...600 grit oil stone to smooth things down a bit...test drive? getting there...may try again....I did have on the "cut-proofs" As I don't need any more cuts. I think that will do for one day?
