August 29, 20187 yr the kitchen has wormy maple cabinets, and most of the rest of the house features wormy maple baseboards and window trim. so as i'm getting my office renovation done, it's time to get baseboards for it. about 50 linear feet of 1x6, ripped to 4" exactly, small round over on top. nothing fancy, but that's what we've done elsewhere in the house. the last time i was down in Albuquerque, at the lumber store (nothing here in Santa Fe), the first store i stopped at, that i had bought much lumber from before, was boarded up. hmmm...on to the back up place. at the back up place, i inquire about wormy maple, and i'm told that they don't carry it. bummer. so i got the other plywood i needed for another project and headed home. so today, i swing by, expecting to just buy some plain maple, it'll have to do. but then i spy in their lumber rack a bin of wormy maple. only has a few pieces that have the figure i'm looking for, so i get a clerk and ask if they have any more? uh, yeah, come this way. an entire pile of 12 foot long pieces of various widths! yay!! so i pick thru it, end up with about 60 BF at $3.12/BF (up from the prior $2.40 or so, but still affordable). way more than i need for the baseboards, but some pieces were just too pretty to pass up. i don't know what they will become, but it will be pretty. so my next project is to rip things down to 4", plane one side smooth, round over one edge, and apply some poly, then cut to size and install. woot. this is going to look great. they had a really nice chunk of 8/4 walnut.....not today, i've spent enough money. as i was paying, the clerk told me another customer had come in a few days ago, paying cash (which is fine with them), had picked out a pile of walnut (about 8-10/BF) for a coffee table for a client, they rang it all up and announced the total of $1900 or so. he asked "how much?!" $1900. uh oh. he had quoted the client $1700 for the project, not factoring in the price of walnut over other woods. he wasn't happy. time to call the client. more money or no table. it's ok to sell the project before you build it, but make sure you leave some margin for beer when you are done.
August 29, 20187 yr Author please note the proper use of thread tags. so where's my chocolate? there is supposed to be chocolate.......

August 30, 20187 yr Dab, that looks a lot like Ambrosia maple, does it have a greenish tint to the dark areas, and a little hole where the bug tunnel was? I love that stuff. HJerb

August 30, 20187 yr Beautiful cabinets and kitchen DAB...IIRC you had posted a few pics before, but never the entire set & layout. WOW! Highly figurative. I like the handles too & especially the orientation on the cabinet doors. BTW...glad you located additional material...looking forward just seeing the new baseboards not to mention what you'll do with the extra. Whatever it is, it will be spectacular with this wood.
August 30, 20187 yr Beautiful kitchen cabinetry. Around where I live I can get 8/4 walnut for $8.90 bd. $1900 is a whopping cost. Danl

August 30, 20187 yr Author little progress made today. got 60 feet of lumber ripped to 4" wide, marked the exposed faces (no one cares what the side that is hidden looks like), and then found that all i have is 2 sets of dull planer blades. and the current set was already turned once. so off to town tomorrow am to get new planer blades. DeWalt 13" planer. think i'll get 2 sets, one to install, one for spare later. i had a feeling that they were dull, was planing some pine last week, and it burned on one side (towards the left), and sure enough, that's where the blades were dulled. also ended up with 3 nice boards that i didn't have to use, 2 very wide (10-12"), one about 6" wide. highly figured. they might become drawer fronts if i end up making a storage cabinet with drawers. or maybe a really nice table.
August 31, 20187 yr I paid .20/bf for the last Walnut I got. I've been told the next would be around a 1.00/bf.

August 31, 20187 yr Author Popular Post two views of the baseboard stock with a coat of poly on them. they'll dry overnight, maybe until sunday when i have time again. and a shot of the TBD pile. i'm thinking of cutting down one of the cutoffs, from 12 feet to 10 feet, and then i'll have a 10 foot pole handy, if i ever don't want to touch something.

September 2, 20187 yr Author 3rd and final coat of poly on this afternoon. assuming they cure nicely overnight, will start measuring and installing them tomorrow. then i can move furniture to where it belongs.
September 3, 20187 yr excellent looking trim------My suggestion----next time try some WB poly---under normal drying conditions recoat is possible in 20-40 minutes and no fumes--works for me for more than 20 years.
