  When we were in Oregon doing a job the laborers sent 2 half full 5 gal cans of latex paint to the disposal. We got a call to come pick it up and take it back. When I inquired as to how to dipose of it , they said to put some powdered cement in it and stir it up. when set up send it to the disposal. Or the other option was to dump it on the ground and hose it with water until it all runs away.

Seems like mixing it with cement would hinder the decomposition cycle...maybe he was old school Mafia and just left out the "add two feet" part:lol::cowboy:

Is Latex paint supposed to decompose? I thought it was to preserve it for future archeological expeditions.

Bill, based on that, is it acceptable by disposal pickup (garbage trucks) for us to put water based paints and finishes in the trash, half full or what have you? Thanks.

Under federal EPA laws, yes, but then, again, you live in another country. I would hesitate to speculate on what your state/local crazies require.

Generally, the latex/water based products have to be dried/solid before disposal. Some localities will allow water based/soluble products to be dumped down the drain or in some cases, diluted and dumped on the ground (not recommended in my opinion). Under federal requirements oil based products are handled differently.

They have to be "empty" containers that have fully cured product residual. If there is uncured product it has to be handled as "hazardous waste" and processed by an approved collection location.

Here in Texas we mix the throw away oil base paint in with the cow feed...Thats the reason some hamburger meat is redder than other packages.. These Enviromental folks says it is a good chaser  for certain drugs...That's why you see lots of kids on drugs down at the Burger King. They are needing to go home and get more money but want to get over their highs so Dad won't cut them off.

So you ask why do they need more money, well dummy, to buy more drugs......Its one of those rotating cycles that never has an ending.     Paul Harvey --- good day!!!

I noticed down on the coast the folks dispose of all that stuff into the gulf but there they can call it Red Tide!

@Smallpatch

You just solved a question that I have pondered for years. We used to feed the cows tobacco in their feed and also molasses. I wondered why I started smoking when I was 7yo. and smoked for 50 years and liked sweets all my life.

In the olden days before "green", Osha's, EPa's and all those other letter watch groups, the most fun way was to toss them into a good roaring trash fire in a 55 gallon barrel, then stand back and watch 'em go into orbit.  Those sure were the good 'ole days.:cowboy:

Where I buy florescent lights is where I take them when they go bad. They are better at taking care of them than I. I saved a box that will hold 12 8' lights. I bought enough when things changed over it will be a long time before I run out. I try my best not to add anything to the environment except sawdust.

Yup and you changed the oil in the rig and spread it on the driveway to keep the dust down. Also you took all the garbage out to the land fill and threw it on the ground and come Monday the county showed up with a bulldozer and dozed into the riven . After school you took the .22 and headed for the dump to shoot the rats on the garbage piles. Maybe there is a song out there "Those were the Days".
