May 31, 20188 yr Popular Post Simple my.... Started out as a way to kill time, waiting on parts for the bedframe project....Had a leftover 2 x 10...ripped it down to get some stock for legs.. Had a 4' long 1 x 10...cut it in half, jointed the edges, and now I had a panel for a table top...let it sit, while I finished up the bedproject... Smaller Mitre box to cut these four legs to 25" long...needed planed to make them match.. Yeah..this will wear you out.... Well, time came to make a few parts for the table.. Panel is out of the clamps, edges jointed, ends squared...set down on the bench.. Flatten the faces of the panel. Set this aside... Blanks for the aprons...after I had cut out most of the "bad stuff". Set these aside...needed to work on the legs..made sure one power tool was running.. And those be the leg blanks... Marked out where the apron will go ( in theory) and then made another mark.. 3/4" wide "toe", metal straightedge to connect two points.. Normally, i would hand plane this...not today. Bandsaw to "hog" off most of the waste...mark another taper.. Kind of rough and wavy, needed a jig to hold the leg steady, yet net get in the way.. made a notch that just fit the toe... A screw holds the other end....Now I can plane the tapers smooth... Jack plane to get it close, #4c to smooth it out... rinse and repeat..seven times.. Four legs, each tapered on two "inside" edges.... Part 2 coming right up...stay tuned...
May 31, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Well, after Supper tonight. went back to the shop....Aprons were needing milled.. Decided to make them 3" wide, mainly to get rid of some bad spots along an edge or two....Bandsaw to rip the waste off... Jointed these sawn edges...then grouped all of them together... To where they all matched....then set up the bead cutter.. Bead cut from two edges. Had trouble with the grain. Plane also wanted to follow the grain, not good. One apron wasn't the greatest, so I made that the "Inside" of the apron.... Set up the Langdon 75 to do shoulder cuts..bandsaw to make the cheek cuts, and trim the tenons for width. 1/4" tenons, 3/4" long. Maybe tomorrow I can get something done? maybe set up to chop a few mortises? I used that little can of varnish back there, to lay out a curve cut for the corners of the table's top...and cut those on the bandsaw. Battery in the camera was getting low...had enough time to clean the place up.. Turn the fan to low, and go upstairs..had enough for one day... Stay tuned...
May 31, 20188 yr I'd say that mallet is very photogenic! You certainly don't let any shop time go to waste.
May 31, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Got a late start today 1500 hrs....got done around 1800 hrs....half of which was sitting on the shop stool.. Top has been profiled..but I needed the space on the bench...stashed the top over on the dryer, for now.. Outside corner on each leg got a bead detail....PITA to do, too. laying out to chop a mortise.. And a few toys...more were to show up, as I went along. Chisels were sized to match the tenon... Fancy handled one has a "hook" for a blade, to clean out the bottoms of the mortises.. You can almost see the curve the chisel has...Green can was quite handy, today...first dry fit...rotate, repeat.. more chisels showed up....got a bit crowded, moved the completed stuff over onto the top.. Two legs done...don't blink... One leg had the tenon location marked wrong..caught that in time....another needed a plane to smooth the show side...I marked each joint to show which part went where.. Got the fourth leg done...decided to dry fit the entire mess.. No glue, ...yet maybe later, after Supper? Need to make the corner blocks,,sometime. otherwise, I just sat around all afternoon....glue bottle is upstairs....IF I remember to haul it to the shop...the base might get glued up Stay tuned...
June 1, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Sooo, now I'm sitting here, picking dried glue off my fingers... tried to glue and clamp where it sat on the bench...didn't go too well....somehow got it to the floor....and clamped the heck out of it... Got it back onto the bench, had to re-install the diagonal clamp...checked the legs..one was splayed way out...clamps to adjust that...Another needed pulled a hair back out, was toed in a bit... Needed 22" outside to outside on the feet,,,also wanted 12" between the end feet....one was a tad wide...it is sitting on the bench, so anyone will be able to walk past it, and not hit anything.. Will let this sit over night..and see what I can do..tomorrow.. Stay tuned..
June 1, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Clamps came off today.. found a chunk of Pine scrap...and used the mitersaw to cut four corner blocks.. You were expecting one with a cord? These needed drilled.. And countersunk... That turned out to be not quite deep enough. ( 3/8" forstner bit deepened them) Set the base into the vise.. 2" screws, Hammerhead Drill then slots were made.. Drill a hole straight down, first.. Then rock the drill to make a slot, in the direction the top will expand and contract in. About like this. Then set the base on top of the top...and center it.. Add a screw into the center of each slot.. Flip the table over, and into the vise... Set up the router to cut a cove detail... Plane the top a bit.. Fan was blowing all those thin shavings away...sander to ease the sharp edges a bit...stir up a can of Golden Oak stain.. First coat is on...set the table aside, while the stain dries ( and I can't smell it anymore..) When the top is dry, I can sit it on the bench, on it's top, and work on getting the rest of the table done. Busy afternoon..stay tuned..
June 3, 20188 yr Author Set the table onto the bench..on it's top. Cleaned things up, and then the Golden Oak was applied... Everything from the top down....corner blocks and all... Found the points of two screws sticking out through the aprons..ooops, will remove those, and shorten them up,,,hate when that happens... Lagers are in the fridge, and this is ready to be dump in the Firepit...maybe roast a few hotdogs later.. It has a set of wheels, to make it easy to haul upstairs.... Will let the stain dry, before the poly gloss goes on...just a simple little table
June 5, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Yeah, yeah, I know..Monday. Had to go TO the shop, to check on the clothes in the dryer, and see how much varnish I had left in the Quart can.... missing maybe a 1/2 pint....lid was open..had a brush handy...how about a PIP? ( clothes needed to go through one more time, anyway....had to do something while I was waiting) I noticed when I look from different angles..the grain seems to change.. vs... One coat of Poly Gloss, over one coat of Golden Oak stain....just a pine table.... Will buff it out tomorrow, and see IF it needs another coat.....maybe a posting in the Gallery? Stay tuned...( clothes are dry now...)
