Workbench questions

Featured Replies

I scrapped my 40+ year old workbench a while back, and am looking for materials for a replacement. Meanwhile, my son has started construction on his new house. As luck would have it, this house is being built with 8" x 8" hemlock logs, with FULL 2" x 4" floors, and other assorted sizes of lumber, all hemlock. I now have the opportunity to get some leftover pieces, and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with this wood. 8 x 8 legs, 4" thick top..... it shouldn't move around too much while planing! Any thoughts?

John

you got 8'' logs (rounds) or 8x8's (squares)???...

8x8 is kinda overkill ain't it... unless they're rounds...

one 8x8 will make 4 legs... go w/ 6 legs...

4'' thick top..

I'd do it in a heart beat...

Kinda figuring to make it so I can take it apart if need be. Wedged through tenons, maybe? And the top should stay in place on four dowels in the ends of the legs. Still planning at this stage.

Dropped by Lee Valley on Thursday to pick up my order, and since it's in the same direction as Busy Bee, I thought I'd drop by there on the way home. Look what followed me home!

Does a pretty good job, too.

Make sure you pen it up for a few days so it doesn't run away.:P

All kidding aside, congratulations on your early Christmas gift. Does mamma know?
