December 2, 20178 yr Popular Post The guy in the brown truck just dropped of an early Christmas gift from me to me. It's a Stanley Sweetheart #62. A low angle jack plane. Destined for shooting board duty, among other things. Ain't she a beauty? The wife's gift is in transit. Thought about getting a plane for her, too. Settled on a birthstone ring. Probably a good thing.

Herb Herb, the reason I picked this low angle plane was specifically for use on the shooting board. Since most of my shooting board work is on end grain, the low angle is better. I have a low angle box plane but there's not enough heft there. My shooting board needs replaced. Might be time to take it to the range.

I have seen it dozens of times on videos, but never could get it to work for me. The plane always stuck or chattered or I skinned my knuckles. It looks so easy on the videos, and when Rob Corson did a plane presentation at our club he made it look so easy. I concluded there is definitely a special technique to it all. Herb
December 2, 20178 yr Author Ya gotta fiddle with the mouth and depth. And have a well sharpened blade, bevel up. Took me a while with my little low angle box plane. Now, I get reeely thin end grain shavings on most woods. But, the 62 is a much longer and heavier tool than the box plane. In theory, it should work easier. Oh, and Rob makes everything look easy.
