November 19, 20178 yr Popular Post As president of the local woodworking club, I am on the contact list. I got an e-mail from a guy last week who'd like to build a jewelry box for his girlfriend but didn't have the tools to do it (lives in an apartment). He came over this afternoon. Nice young man in his mid-20s, an industrial engineer that works for a big company in town. Anyway, he brought over two 2' pieces of 1/2" maple and some 1/8" plywood 12" squares. Cut out the box sides, splined them, groove for the bottom, an egg-grate interior and a plain flat lid. Off he goes. Hope his girlfriend is happy and maybe hooked him on woodworking? I had a couple of guys who helped me out when I was first getting started. Edited November 19, 20178 yr by kmealy
November 19, 20178 yr When I build a small jewelry box, I use 1/2 or 3/4 for the bottom so when opening it, it sits STILL! Womens foam hair curlers with a dowel pushed thru'm placed kinda close together makes a find place to set finger ringers down/between.Bore holes in one end to glue dowels into. I'm gonna hush fore I git barred frum heaw.

November 20, 20178 yr Nice of you to do that for him. Hope you get of the girl friend with a big smile holding the box.
November 20, 20178 yr Author I told him to send me a photo when he got it together. https://www.popularwoodworking.com/techniques/pure-simple-jewelry-box
November 20, 20178 yr Kudos Keith. Ya' did good! You planted the seed, now hope it takes root and grows. Who knows, maybe you saved him from a life if IKEA.
November 20, 20178 yr @Grandpadave52 Who knows, maybe you saved him from a life if IKEA. LOL - Having just returned from a trip to IKEA, I resemble that remark! Cal
November 20, 20178 yr Author "Hi, I'm Keith and I have some IKEA furniture." (all) "Hi, Keith." I have an IKEA Poang chair. Really cheap, very comfortable. Last year, one of the connector bolts holding the back to the arm sheared. No problem, I have a box of connector bolts. First problem was none of them were long enough. Second problem was getting the broken part out of the threaded connector. Took quite a while. Went to IKEA to see if they would either sell or give me a replacement bolt. Well, apparently, they don't carry parts. Even the "scratch and dent room" where they do toss excess hardware didn't have anything close. For want of a nail a horse was lost, etc. Well, they did say they could get one for me. A few days later a FedEx package shows up with two such bolts. Wonder what that cost them? Good thing it was two because a few months later the other side broke. I swear I"m tall but not that big of a guy otherwise.
November 20, 20178 yr Guess that is indicative of the overall quality. No matter how much pressure you placed on those connector bolts, they shouldn't have broken. I couldn't find any technical info on the tensile strength of these types of fasteners, but I can't feature putting enough pressure, either in tension or shear, to break these types of bolts.
November 20, 20178 yr Author Well, IKEA stuff, in general is preferable to the Asian crap I normally see. Beautiful leather sectional made out of OSB, stapled together. The cow regrets giving its life for this. I have seen others in this line made of "bonded leather" that is essential ground up scraps glued back together. Sort of the particle board version of leather furniture.
November 20, 20178 yr As an upholsterer, I just HAVE to ask...... Where in the Hades did you find THIS mess? John
November 20, 20178 yr Author Customer's home. What's maybe not clear is the front to back support also came unstapled and pulled away from the frame. To save even more $0.10, there was no dust cover on the underside. Made it easier to get into. ;-) I've seen worse. One job had a row of plastic spring connectors. Every one across the width of a sofa had broken loose. I tried to get them to let me put in metal spring connectors, but the mfr insisted on putting a new plastic strip in. Otherwise the their warranty would be void. And of course the string of Marshall units in sofa sold by a grocery store. Wrapped in foam and springs everywhere. Let me just put in a foam insert. Nope, kind-for-kind replacement Edited November 20, 20178 yr by kmealy
