October 30, 20178 yr Turned this bradford pear crotch a couple months ago and just got started on second turn. Just wondering opinion on best finish to display grain .
October 30, 20178 yr I've never been one for adding "unnatural" color like dyes. I like the tones of the wood. Perhaps Danish oil with a protective coating?
October 30, 20178 yr I think that grain will pop with just a clear finish. I like spray can shellac for a sanding sealer and lacquer or clear acrylic for a top coat. It's going to beautiful whatever you do. Steve
October 30, 20178 yr 1 hour ago, Gene Howe said: I think Lew has it. Let the wood speak. I think shellac does a great job bringing out the depth and chatoyance of wood. It will "dance with fire" as you walk around it. If this is a display only piece (not to be eaten from or food served on), shellac will be plenty protective enough. (Danish oil or even BLO will have even less protection and lower sheen). I tried reading Krenov a few times. He'd say things like, "Let the wood tell you what to do with it." I must be hard of hearing because I never heard it say anything. Plus, everything I've seen done "Krenov inspired" is one of those cabinets on stands. I don't even need to read the description when I see the photo.
October 31, 20178 yr Author Thanks. I did the Clewes platter in clear gloss lacquer so guess I wil try shellac and clear
October 31, 20178 yr Be sure to post some before and after pics. Can't wait to see the "finished" project.
October 31, 20178 yr Gerald, what do you sand your turnings too? In this specific one, how of a grit did you go? Thanks.
October 31, 20178 yr Author Not finished on the lathe yet but so far have gone to 600. Have to set up vacum chuck for several items and will do the back then.
November 9, 20178 yr That is a beautiful piece and the finish really shows the grain. Nicely done! Steve
November 9, 20178 yr Whoee Gerald. That's really nice. Your finish brought out the feathers and the other grain without any interference.
November 11, 20178 yr Author Thanks for the comments . Been so busy with the 3 days of demo Just have not had a chance to comment
