September 11, 20178 yr Popular Post 911 Within two hours, they were gone forever. The Twin Towers, The Pentagon, and Shanksville Pennsylvania. Today is the 16th Anniversary of the dastardly deed that was inflicted upon our nation by Islamic Terrorists. Let us never forget, and let us never stop trying to eradicate the filth of violent extremism, in all shapes and forms. We pray and we have the victims and families in our thoughts today as we go about our daily routines. Please also pray for the men and women who keep us safe, from our first responders to the folks who serve our nation and keep the bad guys from our shores. The battle is still on, they need our support. Good Monday Morning! Good Monday Patriot Woodworkers! What did you get done over the weekend, and what have you planned for the week ahead! September 11, 20178 yr Thanks John for the solemn reminder and tribute to those who fell 16 y/o today. May we always remember and instill within our future generations too. Got a few smalls re-furbed from recent picks...pics & threads forthcoming...A little yard work accomplished and typical chauffeuring. A couple of home volleyball matches in the offing this week. Some outside yard & property work on the radar depending on Irma effect in West Central Indiana. Some garage organization needed as well.
September 11, 20178 yr We will never forget but a yearly remembrance is necessary for the younger generation. Thanks.
September 11, 20178 yr Thank you, John. Like many, I will not forget where I was or what I was doing when I heard what was going on. For the weekend, we got the new heat pump and inside unit installed. Wife is happy now she has AC. The install took longer than the guy figured so I did not get much done in the shop Saturday. Yesterday, I install the gable fan in the shop, and got it up and running. Move a storage cabinet into its new home, and watched a little football.
September 11, 20178 yr Saturday morning was the woodworking club meeting. Good presentation on a dust collection system one of the guys installed. He really liked the Oneida customer service that went through multiple iterations of design with him. Ended up with 13 boxes of stuff. Did I mention he's an engineer??? I carried in a trailer load of wood that a guy donated to the club. Most of it was 40 years old, air dried, but sitting outside, hopefully it was covered all that time. About 1/2 of it gone. I'll sort through the rest and decide shop vs. firewood after one guy comes over this week and picks what he wants. Mostly cherry, walnut and oak. When you get a call to come and pick up wood sometimes you get good stuff and sometimes you get stuff that isn't even good for firewood. Don't know until you get there. Same with "equipment." Couple of years ago, picked up a crapsman band saw with pot metal bearings that were just shot beyond repair, even if Sears still carried the part. Saturday afternoon was nearly the final build day on theater set due for move-in next weekend. Catch up / finish up paint and build Wednesday evening. Show is "Anything Goes" and we've built a 30' wide 16' tall ship's tableau. Two double way swinging doors. curved guardrails on 10' diameter semi-circles, 4 sets of steps, murphy bed, hinged walls, two desks, 4 round tables, 8 square tables, and a brig. Eeek, red paint everywhere. A month ago we filled up a dumpster in 3 hours with old stock. I think if I was ins charge, I'd have lots more reusable parts -- 4x4 or 4x8 platforms in heights that could be adjusted with just new legs and we'd keep old legs in 1,2,3,4' high standard lengths. Same with wall sections -- some with windows, some with doors, most without. We go through a lot of 2-bys, OSB, and Luaun 1/4" plywood. But I just do what I'm told, I'm not the artiste. Sunday was beekeeper's club annual picnic and swap meet. Picked up wife who got back in town from MI on a weekend sewing retreat.
September 11, 20178 yr Building Cherry trivets for a November show. Next up is a walnut cradle. Anyone have a good source for sanded walnut spindles?
September 11, 20178 yr Delivered the boxes this morning and will get back onto plaques this afternoon. Will never forget that day . We were moving into a new home in a new town and had to think what will happen next?
September 11, 20178 yr Popular Post Will never forget.. Migraine yesterday.....today is the "Morning After"......just about like the morning after a "Pub-Crawl".... Maybe tomorrow..I can get some work done? Hinges have been bought. ''We have work to do..."
September 11, 20178 yr buy cubic yard of gravel, unload and spread cubic yard of gravel. time for a break.
September 11, 20178 yr Took on a new job starting today. As if I didn't have enough to do! An elderly couple we've known for years were desperate for help with their landscaping, so now I'm a "professional" gardener. Trimming, pruning, replacing dead plants, spreading mulch...... They wanted to know how much I would charge, then insisted I take MORE! That's the second time an employer has told me my work is worth more! Must be doing SOMETHING right. Less shop time, but maybe a new tool in my future? John And yes, I too remember this day as if it had been yesterday. Edited September 11, 20178 yr by HARO50
September 12, 20178 yr I remember that. I also remember where i was and what i was doing the day Kennedy was shot. Not pleasant memories at all. Saturday was usual Habitat volunteering. We didn't have a very good day, but that happens sometimes when the weather is nice. Sunday was more helping the neighbor with his power to the barn project (1st part was rolling out a couple of hundred feet of 4-0 wire primaries and a neutral, putting it in conduit and gluing the conduit together. That's enough to wear a person out.

September 14, 20178 yr This is not a project gripe or vent post because I'm enjoying every frustrating step. For various reasons, I'm taking a new (to me) track in building this next rifle case. The case is 10" deep, 6" wide and 42" long. The case sides and ends are built up with a 5" X 42" panel of Mesquite, with lengths of Walnut above and below the Mesquite. Between the Walnut lengths and between the Walnut and Mesquite are 3/16" thick strips of maple. Because I'm a masochist, I decided to ebonize the walnut! Ebonizing doesn't penetrate far enough to allow for any aggressive sanding. Consequently each walnut piece must have it's grain raised and sanded smooth before its ebonized. Not a big deal, right? But, I realized that every other piece has to be sanded smooth, too. All, BEFORE glue up. So, to insure uniformity, the panel has to be dry assembled, finish sanded, taken apart, the walnut ebonized, reassembled and, then I've got to execute the neatest glue up ever...for me. That, in itself, is a new experience. Masochism, lack of foresight and downright ignorance makes for a long, drawn out process. But, hey. I'm still "larnin" and it's still fun. Check with me after three more panels, though.
