There is some good information in this post, thanks to Keith and Stick, just have to figure out how to save it, it all comes up in "read Only" format.

Herb

Herb, you can copy and paste into a Word program and then save the document you create

Bird's Mouth Bits...

no router table???

you can do this same cut w/ a dado blade and save you a lot of fretting and figuring...

NOTES:

skip the TB for the column glue up and use PL Premium Construction Adhesive...

more help...  BIRD'S-MOUTH PDF.pdf

instead of cutting internal octagons for the column do spreaders instead...

use quality exterior grade plywood for the column instead of 1x stock...

cut your 1st taper...

flip the sheet end for end and cut the second taper...

continue on till you have your 8 sides... this makes for limited waste...

do all of your measures from the/any piece's center-line...

Stick, the idea of making a template top and bottom makes sense to me but then how do you correlate that to the height dimension? The taper will change if it's 30" or 36" tall?

very large piece of paper or cardboard... paper from an art store or brown wrapping paper or a bunch of plain sheets tape together will wor...

I like the wrapping paper.. that can be had in white too...

aesthetically draw it out...

work off of a center line... center rule will be your savior here...

once you determine the sizes and slopes by sight you figure the angles afterward...

and when you are happy w/ the size/shape/slope of one panel/stave all eight panels/staves will be the same size...

tell us what sizes yur gonna use and we'll refine it from there...

be nice to know your choice of materials will be too...

Guys, I have to put this on hold for a while as I have another project more pressing come up. I'll be back when I get around to it again, thank so much for all the support to date.

Guys, I'm back at another project with the same type of cuts so I figured I would add it here. How can we proceed from this drawing to calculate blade tilt and angle for cut these pieces on the table saw? I want to make jigs as I know I'll be making way more than one when the family ladies see them.

Stick what program was the link for the calculator that you added? I can't open it.

With eight sides 22.5 degrees and with six sides 30 degrees if that is what you were asking. At least that has always worked for me.

I think he wants the degrees on the long cut/face taper not the edge...
