Local kids start back to school tomorrow. Summer just flew by!

@HandyDan Posted some pens he made fashioned after those of Capt. Eddie's-

There's more on his post at-

Speaking of pen turning, Ernie Conover has a video on some pen turning tips. His method of drilling the blanks is a little different than the way I learned.

Carl Jacobson put up a video showing some of Ruth Niles' bottle stoppers-

Notice the use of the Easy Wood Tool #1 Hollower for shaping the outside of the bottle stopper!

Every time I turn a hollowed out piece (bowl, vase, etc.), I'm always worried about going too deep. This is especially true when I make a chuck recess versus the tenon. Here's a video from the "WyomingWoodTurner" where he makes a neat jig to accurately gauge the depth of the cuts.

It must have been the week for turning causalties. @Steve Krumanaker's walnut vase wasn't turning out like he had hoped. Steve posted a picture of it here-

Earlier this week, in a different thread, I posted some pictures of my "Great Ironwood Bowl Disaster"

After some thought and experimentation, this is what's left. It still needs some finish.

I still might make a lid for it, or not.

Safe Turning

Thanks for the nod on my pen project.  I'm glad to see you were able to salvage that nice looking bowl from your conundrum.  Can't wait to find some time to view all the videos you posted for us.  Thank you for your time.

Nice job again Lew, I've gotten to where I look forward to this feature every week. Looking at your catch I can say at least I'm in good company! :)

Steve

You spoil us Lew with the thought and detail you put into your weekly update.

Great continuity and theme.

The bowl turned out (no pun intended:P) exceptionally nice.

Nice save, Lew. The color is not what I expected. Very pretty, though. Those inclusions are interesting, too. Odd how their tails sorta radiate.

I enjoyed Ernie's video on turning pens.  I drill on the lathe as he does since I believe accuracy is enhanced that way.  For the stick pens I make I start the hole for the ink tube and finish it on the lathe but hold the drill chuck and run the bit in and out.  Makes it quicker and easier to clear the flutes.  When the flutes are clogged and the bit is forced the bit will usually drift off center.

Great Save, Lew. And, another great weekly post

I thought that was pretty cool, the way the did that. I counted the rings on the "log" and got a little over 80. Sure was slow growing!

Thanks for all the kind comments and the encouragement on the little bowl. Really Appreciated!

Yeah, glad to see you could save most of that bowl.   Rim doesn't appear quite as thin, but it's still a nice piece and might look good with a lid.:)
