Hot water heater

Featured Replies

A friend of mine is planning to go to a warmer climate state for 6 weeks this coming winter.  During that time, he plans to shut off the house supplied water at the shut-off valve.  Should he also shut-off his hot water heater?

I would.

Yes, indeed!

It would make sense to.

Absolutely!

If I go on a trip, even for a couple of days, I turn off the main water line (I installed a ball valve on the main into the house), and the hot water tank inlet. In addition I turn off the breaker to the hot water tank. There is no sense to keep heating the water and burning electricity. If the tank were to rupture and drain the elements would remain on constantly. This could cause a lot of additional problems.

yes...

I would do like Bill said, and flush all the toilets and leave a facet open in the sink, and set the furnace for a minimum temperature of 55 degrees.

More importantly, most people don't think about this when gone for an extended period like 6 weeks...

Clean out the refrigerator, unplug it and leave the doors open. Nothing worse then to go and have the electricity go off, or a breaker trip. Then things go bad in the fridge. Farm out the frozen goods or take them with you if you have to do so. Nothing worse then spoiled food inside a refrigerator. If you don't catch it soon enough, you'll never get rid of the rancid odor.

yup...

Geez.   I missed the part that said if it was gas or electric and for a minute thought someone had been peeking in my windows today.

My 5 year old water heater thermostat/gas control puked and i had to have a service guy out and replace it.   Looked them up on the web

and they're around $270-300.   Ain't technology wonderful?   I love me some 1st world problems as they say (well, actually love me some

hot water shower in the morning before i head to work; thankfully took day as vacation and spent most of it working anyway...grrrr).

Apologies for hijacking thread.

No apology necessary...brought up a good point...address the gas if you have it available.

I have a tendency to forget about gas because I haven't had it available for years, now! Wish I did...I would much rather cook on a gas stove then these electric ones.

Around here, we have a great invention called a "restaurant". Someone who CAN cook will serve you food for money, so you don't starve! I'm surprised you 'Muricans haven't caught on yet.
