After vacation I got home and it seemed everything I touched broke. Started to cut the grass and the mower wouldn't run, got out the weed wacker and it wouldn't crank, and then the AC stopped. So needless to say I got behind a little bit getting everything back up and running.

Today I worked on building two small round Cherry tables. I got the panel glued for the two tops.

and the blanks make fir the legs legs and got the mortises cut in all the legs.

And I have the pieces cut for the stretchers and need to cut the tenons.

Everthing will be ready for finish tomorrow.

What's on your agenda this weekend. We all love to hear about your projects and see the pictures.

Trying to get a thumb healed up....:o broke a chip off a bone in it. :(  Yep, it would just have to be the right thumb, when I am righthanded..

Just about got the new miter saw station wrapped up. Then, it'll be the for real rifle case. The Mesquite is calling my name.

It might actually be shop time for me today.  As part of my upstairs remodel I have changed the moulding from none/colonial style to craftsman style.  While I did not change the doors out, I did change out all the trim around the doors & windows and fabricated (if that is a good word for what I did) a crown moulding.  For the attic door which was a hollow core flat door I shot some spray foam insulation in it and framed a beadboard panel on the front.  Done a similar frame and beadboard to the front of the hvac door.  Today I have another, smaller attic access door to work on and make up some new center legs to attach to the center slats in the bed frame.

Next week I may get the laminate flooring and baseboard down in one bedroom!

I'm working on another decorative platter, it's been just too hot and humid to do much in the shop so not much going out there. Next week should be much better. I want to do some more hollow forms, mostly to learn and get better at them. The platter I'm working is nearly finished and I just have to do a center motif on it. Wanted to do something with a little color in it and decided on a sunset scene I found on line. I've done several test pieces but as yet just haven't gotten the color to "pop" like I want it too. Most of the image is wood burned but I'm trying to use water colors to accent it.

I'll do a couple more and see if I can figure it out. I like the texture the wood burning adds and if I can get the color right I think it be a nice touch.

Wood burning is a skill that I need.

Then, I'd have one.

Seriously, any hints? I have a semi decent kit.

Hi Gene

I have to say up front, my wood burning skills are pretty basic. If you want to see some real artistry at wood burning check out the pyrography group on FB. There are some amazing artists who frequent that group. One of them is Minisa Robinson, her website is http://www.minisa-pyrography.com/

A couple things I have learned are that patience is requisite and learning to shade is key. When a person is only working with different values of light and dark, shading is the only tool you have to create shape and texture. Honing that skill can only come with practice and more practice, much like turning, scroll sawing, or any other art form.

Valadimir Horowitz said it best I think. "The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is practice"

Many thanks, Steve. That gal's work is amazing. May order her beginner's video. I really need another addiction... to qualify for rehab.

No woodworking as I am in NC. Yesterday my son and I were shopping for wood . Went by Ginnett in Asheville and saw some great pieces but he was looking for mahogany and me curly maple. Went to Bee Tree Hardwoods in Swananoa and boy was I in heaven. Found the mahogany 14 foot  x 18 inches x 6/4 and sine he has no tools guess who gets to take it home to make shelves, For me curly maple 13.5 inches x 8 feet x 8/4 and yes there will be more platters. So when we get home along with the boxes from church pews , drawers for kitchen island , shelves , and the other little projects started in the shop will have plenty to do.

I can't speak to her beginners video but I do have her video on shading. It is excellent and has helped me for sure.

Thanks, the original of that table was 22" diameter and 28" tall.  Someone saw it on my website and wanted them made to fit a special need. These two are 12" diameter and 24" tall. I had to do lots of adjusting to keep the proportions right. The legs have a slight taper on the outside edge.
