Popular Post PostalTom Posted July 9, 2017 Popular Post Report Posted July 9, 2017 (edited) Nice looking bowl Tom. I remember chasing my first bowl across the shop a couple times after a bad catch. Be sure to post it in the Turning Forum. We could use the extra traffic over there Had to do a copy and paste of a comment by HandyDan from the Woodworking forum, since I didn't know how to quote and migrate to another forum. Good suggestion Dan, here it is. The title is a little misleading, as my really first bowl wound up in pieces in the trash can. This is the bowl I turned at the basic bowl turning class I went to at the Woodcraft store in Tulsa. I picked up a mid size EWT rougher there also, and am anxious to put together a blank and try it out. The wood is Sycamore, finished with a coat of sanding sealer, and a coat of high friction polish. I didn't know there was such a thing until I took the class. Edited July 9, 2017 by PostalTom Got posted before I was finished. lew, Grandpadave52, p_toad and 2 others 5 Quote
lew Posted July 9, 2017 Report Posted July 9, 2017 A lot nicer then my first (2nd, 3rd) attempt! I'll have to try turning some sycamore, it is super plentiful around here. Do you like the friction polish? Quote
HandyDan Posted July 9, 2017 Report Posted July 9, 2017 Tom, at the bottom of each reply is a quote button. Hit the quote button. Set your cursor under the quote and go with your reply. So this is the first finished bowl. Very good then you are normal like the rest of us. Mistakes are what make us better. Just be safe and try to stay out of the firing range when pieces come off the lathe. HARO50 1 Quote

Dan, I know about the quote button, but that would have put the quote on the Woodworking forum, I wanted to quote you in my post on the Turner's forum as you suggested. The only way I know how to do that was a copy and paste. Quote

We have a tool store here that has a Rockler outlet within the store. I'm going to see if they carry any before I order online. My "googling" seems to show two main brands, Mylands and Hut. Any recommendations on which one is better? Edited July 9, 2017 by PostalTom Left out a couple of words. Quote

Friction polish was once popular for pens but with the lack of longevity it lost favor. Bowl looks good for a starter. Just keep practicing. Quote

Steve Krumanaker Posted July 9, 2017 Report Posted July 9, 2017 That certainly looks better than my first bowl, and my second and third for that matter. It's important to remember, we all start at the beginning. They only get better from here. Steve HARO50 1 Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted July 15, 2017 Report Posted July 15, 2017 Great job Tom...You should have received an "A" in this class. Quote
PostalTom Posted July 15, 2017 Author Report Posted July 15, 2017 Thanks Dave. I appreciate that. My next step is to get some 8/4 poplar and cut out some blanks to practice on before I invest more expensive wood. I can always use those as catch-alls in my shop. Grandpadave52, lew and Cal 3 Quote
