June 13, 20179 yr Popular Post ...and surprised. Stumpy Nubs http://www.stumpynubs.com sponsored a chair building contest. I was just notified that my Morris chair took second prize. The prize is a Smart Vise. Here's the chair. Edited June 13, 20179 yr by Gene Howe

June 13, 20179 yr Congratulations and now that you have this signature piece we will be looking for our copy in the return mail
June 13, 20179 yr Congrats Gene!! That Morris chair and ottoman were pretty darned nice looking from where I sit so an honor well deserved. As for the Smart Vice as the prize, well leaves me out then...I'm not smart so probably couldn't use it!

Still haven't got them firing on all cylinders, yet. Edited June 13, 20179 yr by Gene Howe
June 13, 20179 yr Author Thanks so much for the congrats and kind comments, guys. They are appreciated greatly.
June 13, 20179 yr A well deserved second place Gene. I know I'd be very comfortable relaxing in that chair.. You'll have to try a little harder next year. My daughter is a quilter. She entered a quilt in the local fair and won a yellow ribbon. Went back the following year with another quilt and won a blue ribbon. Finally last year, with her third quilt, she won best in show. Hundreds of quilts in the show. Perseverance!
June 13, 20179 yr Author Didn't set out to win anything. Stumpy called for entries and I had just finished that chair so it got entered. That was some time ago. In the meantime, a matching one was built. If there's another contest for chairs, I don't think one of mine will be there. Two is enough for me.

June 13, 20179 yr Gene, your chair is a wonderful piece of work, I agree, should have taken first. Why? Frankly I'm tired of seeing sculpted rockers, not meant as an insult to the maker, I am sure it's beautiful work, but the sculpted rocker world has been so over inflated, it just feels passe, and over done. All due respect to the great Maloof, (tired of seeing him all over the place too) and others who build them, I like building them myself, but everywhere you look on the internet someone is building a sculpted rocker. If anyone here is building a sculpted rocker, please do not be offended, they are fun to build, they develop some wonderful skill sets, they are a great lesson in joinery and laminating and bending. Please show your rockers here. I'm just spouting off is all.
June 13, 20179 yr Author John, thanks for the compliment. There's no shortage of Morris chairs, either. Personally, I enjoy seeing the craftsmanship in a sculpted rocker. Morris chairs are just cutting pieces and fitting them together. Any hack can build one.
