There are some things you shouldn't tell anyone.....

but I'm going to tell you anyway. Some days............weeks.................months....I can be pretty dumb. Usually, I'm pretty good about putting things back where they go. Once in a while though, I get into a project and tools fall where they may. Well, a few months ago I was using my collet chuck and needed the 1/4" insert. Looked in the box and it wasn't there, I thought, okay, it's probably in the side pocket of my smock, wasn't there. Sometimes, not paying attention I'll put an item in the drawer above or below where it belongs. Checked, it wasn't there. By now, I'm wracking my brain, thinking about where I may have stuck it. Looked back in the box, still wasn't there. Cleared my work bench, that's a favorite trick when I can't find something but still didn't find the collet. Started going through cabinets, drawers, bins, etc etc. Finally, after several searches over a few weeks I decided it must've fallen in shavings and I'd thrown it away. This morning, I found it.

It was in the box the whole time. Never mind the simple logic that told me they were all there since  there are only five collets in the set. If you look under the one tool handle you can the 1/4" opening inside the larger opening. I had put the collet where it goes, except upside down, saw the larger opening and chose to believe I'd misplaced it. doh, I could be in the movie dumb and dumber and play both roles.

I really thought the story was going to end with you realizing it was installed in the chuck.  Don't know why I would think that.

Spent 2 days looking for my 6" tool rest. Gave up figure it went out with the shavings. Found it later under some sandpaper lathe table.

Normal day for me,,I do this every day, just though it was part of wood working.

I was thinking the same thing while reading the plight:huh:

Just a normal day in my world anymore...

That is what I thought too.

I spent 20 minutes one time trying to find my darn pencil - it was behind my ear :blink:

No tool gets lost in my shop. They just become temporarily inaccessible. I often dedicate time to tool accessibility rejuvenation.:D

Yea, normal day for me too but normally I find what I'm looking for in a few minutes or an hour or so. This went on literally for about 3 months and the dang thing was where it was supposed to  be the whole time! That's what got to me on this one. On a brighter note, had a "wellness checkup" today. Doc did some short term memory tests, told me I have no issues, he should visit my shop sometime. :)

A long time ago I put a pencil and a tape measure by every power tool. Next thing I know I have 5 tapes measures in my apron and 5 pencils too.

No, really! Say, it ain't so...I'd never do something like that...

The sad part about it was I couldn't find one and was looking all over for them, I knew I had put one beside each machine and they were all gone.:o

It makes me feel good, knowing I'm not alone. I guess these senior moments are normal.

A little late seeing this, but I certainly am glad I'm not the ONLY one! Wish I had a dollar for every time I walked around all day with a pencil on my ear, after having been in the shop!
