May 13, 20178 yr Popular Post Day one is done.....took two trips to do that, and bring the stuff home. Along with all the normal Friday stuff... Planes? Paid for three of them.. These two and a Great Neck thing hat was shaped like a block plane. I switched the front knob over to the Stanley No.4c, from the Stanley Defiance No. 3. The #4c is a type 10. More about these two later... Saws? It is a Disston....for tree trimming. Ugly teeth award.. Meh...have a few branches that need to be trimmed back....and First of two $1 handsaws...this is the better of the two. It even has a nib... Both of these $1 saws are 26" long. As for number 2.. Warranted Superior on the medallion. Bought this just for the hardware....not the tape, though.. Not sure IF this is a bolt, or a rivet....goes all the way through. And next.. Between the pruning saw and these items, I spent $5.25 Found the hammer head in one box, the handle in another. iron was a quarter. Largest hex key is 5/16". Straight jaw is almost brand new... Then there was this box.. Wasn't a full box, but.. Left side of the box.. And the right side. There were tapered shank bits.. Handsome, ain't they? I'm still digging through the rest, but there were another type of bit.. The expansive bit is a Craftsman, and goes out to 1-1/4". haven't cleaned the others up yet. May go back and see IF a pair of almost brand new braces are still on a table, tomorrow. Day One is done, day Two is about to begin...
May 14, 20178 yr Author Popular Post Day 2 is done....one tool box. $10 Something called a Peerless Tool Box So, what made this "thing" so special? There was a "Made in WGermany 5/8" plug cutter stuck in that Made in USA chuck. Wood handle is a 1/4" Gimlet. 1/2 of the bits were R Jennings. Was so many bits, I had to go back and pick two more braces.....why change just the bit, just change the entire set up.... The #4c from yesterday? Stanley #4c, Type 10. Kind of a shame, though.. I know a fellow who can silver braze this. Til then, I clean it all the way up, and sit it on a shelf. Drill Bits? Smallest is 5/32". There is a large countersink bit, too. Cleaned this up. the one in the middle had been used to open a beer can....they left the "washer" from the can's side on the bit. 1-1/4 expansive bit, 7/8" amd 1" Irwins. Tool box had these fine thread R. Jennings bits..little one is 1/4".. It also had these coarse threaded ones. Tool box stuff, again. Couple of taps, that Gimlet, a few punches, easy out, 5/8" plug cutter, and one nail set. This was also in the tool box. Only markings on it? "Made in USA", MIGHT be a LATE model Millers Falls.... This old ( or is it Odd) fellow is now plumb tuckered out. Not to bad a weekend? Rest of the stuff will get cleaned when I get a bit of time. I also went to Menards, and picked a few pine boards, for that Pantry Project.....need to get them OUT of the van, and into the shop for a few days.
May 14, 20178 yr Pretty good pickings there my friend. It is a shame on the plane for sure; at least you got some usable parts for now if needed...Appears the brace (MF??) in the last picture has rose wood handles so very well could be a M-F's. Nice set of twist bits with the brace shank. Cleaned up very well as did most everything. Glad you were able to rescue these and bring them back to life...They are home where they belong now!! BTW...be a good 'boy' tomorrow or the "birthday bunny" might not show up on the 14th... just sayin'!
May 14, 20178 yr Author Birthday is Monday.....#64. One of the "extra " braces was having a problem,,,,chuck was wobbly. Took the chuck apart from the rest of the brace. BAD machining..rough casting wasn't even finish ground. A little work on my set ups.....no more wobble. They never trimmed the end for length. Got that done, and it is even square! Handles are plastic, might be a "loaner" brace. Chuck was "shaped" like a Holdall chuck.....with 4 jaws. Even the one that came with the tool box is 100% better in fit and finish. IF I can get the camera to take a few pictures of this "thing"..... Second "extra" brace has "JAPAN" stamped on it, but at least the Barber chuck looks good. There is even real wood for the handles! $2 each...meh. Mothers' Day Meals today....won't get much shop time...Birthday Meals tomorrow... means I can stay out of the shop on Monday.
May 15, 20178 yr Author Ok, found a few "extras" in that $2 box.. A couple extra long drill bits, smaller one is a 3/16". The brace drill bit is also a 3/16" A tap, third one in the haul, is a 1/4" x 28 NF. Then there was that strange looking bit Rasp...saw? Fuzzy looking because... Those are all sharp pointy teeth. As for the two extra braces? The one $2 brace has a Barber chuck, seems to be ok...marked "JAPAN" As for the second one... Plastic handles were the "best" part of this $2 FUBAR......it was bad when it was made.....it even had a "Clearence" sticker on it.... Little pieces of steel, riveted to the spring steel keepers. The shaft that goes into the gearbox, was cast bent, never machined smooth. It wobbles in the box..badly. Selector was just as badly made. made to look like a Holdall Chuck Seems it should be called a "Hold-none" chuck.......will be in Tuesday's trash can... Bright shiny objects can blind even the best Runt Hunters.. and this one had no rust. Logo on the handle says Jobsmart.....yeah...riiiigghhtt. Note to self....avoid these at all costs. Still..not too bad a weekend.
May 18, 20178 yr Author Have all the tapered bits cleaned up. They have a Morse taper. Largest size was a 35/64", down to about a 3/16". While cleaning up a few non-tapered bits....found two that were stamped "FORD" in script. Also had a USAC and a #5468. haven't a clue as to what they are from. Pictures later.....they make the 1/2" bit look small. Edited May 18, 20178 yr by steven newman
May 19, 20178 yr Author Ok, a look at a few other items for last week's hunt and today's road trip... Merely stamped "JAPAN" a 10" sweep, Barber chuck brace. Ratchet works great, jaws could be better. Next.. Hmmm, plate from one junker saw was straight and sharp. Handle from the other Junky saw was in great shape. Hardware is a "blend". I also switched out a few brass bolts on a No. 7 saw I had. Now has the correct medallion. This one is a Warranted Superior. Next.. From this morning, a "half" ruler. Not sure where the other half is, but for a dollar bill, and a combo square's head... Now have a "combo shorty" square. next.. $1, for a 3/4" wide chisel. Matches a 1-1/2" version I had. and finally.. Spent a dollar on this, just for the parts. Body is stamped steel.. It can be dropped onto a floor, and not break like cast iron......meh. Hope it doesn't rain tomorrow, I might venture out and see what else is out there...
May 20, 20178 yr Author Another day, another $3....meh.. Couple of bits to fill in my set. The "Billy club" is a North Brothers YANKEE No. 35. Has 6 patent dates stamped on it. Seems this was from BEFORE Stanley bought them out. Doesn't seem to have a spring return inside.....everything else works nicely. Might need a bit of clean up... Drill bits are also stamped.. 1/8 by Morse (?) 5/32" by ETNA.... Fellow that had these will be at West Liberty's Tractor Fest this coming Labour Day weekend. He usually has about three tents set up, today it was just one. These came from his "Dollar Table"
