I used to put 1/16" deep cut about 1/8" in from all vertical surfaces.  

In your case the legs end grain near the casters.  The horizontal top boards bottom side all around.  

The 1/16" acts as a drip edge and will breaks the water tension to that is does not travel farther inward.

The stringers bottom horizontal surface.

Just my thoughts and no intention of hijacking this thread.

 

These were not finished at the request of the purchaser. They wanted to put their own finish on. I usually put a couple of coats of Shellac and then General Finishes Enduro-Var.

 

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep them in mind.
