John Morris Posted February 20, 2017 Report Posted February 20, 2017 Good Morning Patriot Woodworker's and Guests and Viewers! And what a glorious Monday it is. Well here we are, embarking on yet another great week in our community for sharing, learning, collaborative efforts and just flat out fun and interest. So to the question of the day, what did you do this past weekend and what have you planned for the week ahead? Your replies could be anything regarding woodworking of course, and anything regarding life for certain! We know we are not woodworkers 24/7, many of us have a life outside of woodworking (really?) and we take trips, have other plans with the family, and we may even be dealing with some not so wonderful realities of life, we'd love to read and share that as well. So have at it folks, anything goes, what'd ya do, and what ya doing! Recent happenings Per @Stick486 suggestion for a new sub-forum for our MWTCA projects, we now have a sub-forum live dedicated to the MWTCA What's It project. Thanks Stick! Our blogs, don't forget folks we have a wonderful blogging area for our community, and some nice projects have rolled in recently at Blogs. And for a quick run down on how to use our blogging platform, you can see how at "How to Create a Blog". On a side note: do you know a friend who loves to blog about woodworking? Do you know a professional blogger for woodworking who would like their content to be seen by thousands? Shoot him our way, we'd love to host their blog with us. Moaners and Groaners and Other Dribble and Useless Conversation and Other Drivel topics are long, fast, and fun! Please keep it tame, I was perusing the topics a few days ago and I had to remove some posts due to violations of our Guidelines. Removal of posts in those particular forums will happen without warning and without explanation if they violate any of our Guidelines. It's a pretty big job keeping tabs on the woodworking portion of our community without having to worry about a completely off-topic discussion and if there are violations within it. Thank you all for your understanding! Featured Gallery Check out this wonderful military art work by @oleglenn. And while you are there, see his other albums a well. He's a busy man at that scroll saw! HandyDan Posted February 20, 2017 Report Posted February 20, 2017 Weather was sunny and in the 60s this weekend. Spent some time outside just because. Some of the neighbors came out of hibernation too and got to chat with them a bit. Worked on that batch of ornaments I have been doing. They are all turned and I am working on the finish and trim. steven newman Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 well...normal Monday. Screen door in installed..almost. Have to go and buy a new latch, as the old one fell apart. Door needed about 1/4" shaved off one edge.....circular saw got most of it.....Stanley #5-1/2 got the rest. Added a trim board around the outside, as the new door was a lot thicker. Work in Progress... Working on a couple "Cold ones" to wind down..... Harry Brink 1 Quote
HARO50 Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 Dog-sat at the daughter's place Sunday-Monday. Funeral for sister-in-law's dad Tuesday. Another funeral 0n Wednesday. Might putter around in the shop later in the week, sweeping up cobwebs. John FWIW, @John Morris, do you notify anyone when you remove their post? Personally, I would like to know if any of my posts are considered questionable. Grandpadave52 1 Quote
Ron Dudelston Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 I'm still working on the two white oak bookcases for a customer. My week has been disrupted a bit by a drain issue in the utility room but hopefully by tomorrow afternoon I'll be back on the bookcases. steven newman 1 Quote

Grandpadave52 Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) @John Morris...eye candy is really cool again this week...love the lathe...assume you saw the rocker off to the left and partially out of the picture... Failed to conscript the grandkids for yard clean-up duty but I managed to pick up several small downed limbs on my own...sharpened my pocket knife (way past due), made some in-roads on garage clean-up, cleaned all sweeper canisters/filters, checked fluid levels & tire pressures on all vehicles, washed windows in/out on wife's Jeep; wife & I went out for pizza lunch yesterday after church then went Krogering...filled bird feeder stations, hauled re-cycling to drop-off center, drank lots of coffee and whiled away rest of the time bantering with my friends here at The Patriot Woodworker ... Oh yeah, almost forgot...counseled @Stick486 to "follow his dreams" Edited February 21, 2017 by Grandpadave52 Chips N Dust, LarryS, Stick486 and 1 other 4 Quote
kmealy Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 Took advantage of the 68 degree and sunny weather and worked in the yard. Got 135 concrete blocks for a fire pit and raised garden bed. Got the fire going and burned up a bunch of trimmings. Then worked on the garden beds. Sore shoulders. Chips N Dust, steven newman and HARO50 3 Quote

Gerald Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) I have a tree limb given to me that the tree cutters said was oak, NOT. No Strong smell and the wood is whiter than ash with a moderate grain line. Cuts well and has a reddish yellow pith . Any ideas on this wood? But it aint oak, I have no idea Gerald, but for the good ol standby species, like Maple and such, but that would be too easy. Elm? Quote
Gene Howe Posted February 21, 2017 Report Posted February 21, 2017 The bark does look a bit like elm. No odor? The elm I've worked came from IL, a victim of Dutch Elm Disease. It faintly smelled like urine. Quote
Gerald Posted February 22, 2017 Report Posted February 22, 2017 Does have a faint horse like odor. Quote

HandyDan Posted February 22, 2017 Report Posted February 22, 2017 Looks like Slippery Elm so watch your step. http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/DENDROLOGY/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=42 HARO50 and steven newman 2 Quote
Gerald Posted February 23, 2017 Report Posted February 23, 2017 Thought you might have something Dan. Looked it up and color of wood does not match....unless the sapwood is the white that I have. This is a limb so heartwood is not developed. Heartwood matched Elm, just that there is so little of it. Quote
