February 14, 20178 yr In addition to the French curved set this 17 x 22" pad of paper has helped me draw out all my own thoughts and let me turn some of them into actual pieces of wood dodads... Just the right size for the scroll saw can't handle anything bigger than 20" so these sheets of paper gives me some wiggle room. We happen to walk in to a large office supply one day waiting for a doctors appointment in 1999 and it kinda changed my whole outlook of woodworking....I already owned the french curved set, but with out the graph paper, the french curved set was was filed away and hadn't been used for many years... All these placques with the letters I cut out using the word pad here on microsoft became second nature....Hey I am an artist, wait a minute, not so fast. Someone has to want to buy what it is you are wanting to build. Me thinking, No no, now I think I can tell anyone yes I can do the things, you all, texas slang, out there are just dying for me to make something for you.. Okay so everything I make is not tied to the french but some things I like to make comes free from microsoft. All these letters for the names are free. This guy said I want to by that clock for his wife's Christmas some time ago. Well I actually made this one for my wife but if you can wait a month or so I will see if I can make you one like it only bigger and better. Boy, that was some bold and wild words. I even added June's name to the tall one which he like better especially since it was bigger than the other , but so did I. I had to tape two pieces of graph paper together but here I learned a lot sitting there looking at the one I had already made and try to improve on some of the lines I wasn't exactly happy about while connecting the lines on the first one. That's why they make pencils and erasers and believe me I was watching the the lines that came with the paper kinda disappear as I drew....I will suggest one other thing that really helped draw these clocks,,,,,,, I ordered lots and lots of pairs of carvings I could find anywhere to buy.... and before I started putting my lines on the paper I would lay pairs of carvings out then try to make my lines blend in with the carvings. And the tall clock is a good example of the form of the clock matching the carvings.. If a person does use store bought carvings, I like to add about 1/2" extra to the thickness. Glue wood on the back then use the scroll saw and cut out the hangovers. I usually buy the larger carvings then cut them down for the areas they will be used on. Its raining and I need to spray my horsey so the reason for these hopefully helpful things I learned a little at a time... Oh and Harry Brink,,,,, When I am cutting out letters to be free standing like the ones below, I only go in the white area with the blade and leave all the black. And to make it a lot easier to glue the letters down, I leave them all attached to each other..... You have to draw this out under the name before you get to the scroll saw. These are store bought carvings I think came from Hobby Lobby. Here is where the French Curved set came in handy again. The letters came off of Microsoft. The quilt racks were drawn up with french curves. All this and more came from that pad of graph paper.......
February 14, 20178 yr Dang, Patch, it is worth the subscription fees here just to see the pictures of all the wonderful stuff you make. How fancy is that? Wow, just boggles my fragile mind. Nice work , keep buying that paper, don't stop. Herb
February 14, 20178 yr Author Herb I just wonder what a person has to do to get more guys posting pictures of things they build. Or, are there only a small handful that can actually make something out of wood. That old saying, without pictures it never happened!!! really happenes on these woodworking forums.... And the worst part is when I am talking to someone here and I have no idea how involved one should be to the guys on the other end.. A guy mentioned the other day, don't get too deep in terminology with me for I have never flipped a switch on any wood working machines in my life.. but a least it let me know how to respond to him. And thanks to Steamshovel for posting a picture of something he made ever though it happened about when the last ice age left its marks. It lets us know what maybe you are capable of similar or even more complicated things. He asked about some things and I responded with all I knew and it took about ten seconds and not even a full breath of air so now I can't wait for you, him , Preston to get that shop insulated so we can get on with mangling some wood and produce some pictures for me to criticize. I am in the learning stages of wanting to learn to carve and someone asks those questions I had to run and open some books to learn how to respond to him.... We can learn together so forget about 40 below. If that gal on Alaska, the last frontier who has two kids has never had running water in the house in her life can smile about it then some of these guys can start posting pictures of wood items. At least pretend you made something and let everyone see something... Herb it took some graph paper for me. Now we got to work on something to get these guys out of the house. Do you think it would help if you bought every one a camera???????? I will admit I sent one of these guys a perfectly good CAnon sd 200 digital camera and not one picture, nothing, nada
February 14, 20178 yr Patch, you make me laugh, You are right in a sense. Some people might be intimidated by your fine work. DON"T STOP the pictures though, I think everyone loves them. I do. I have at least 10 of those Cannon A-540 cameras ,one in each vehicle and several around the house and in the shop, you can buy them on ebay for around $12.00 and I paid over $120 when they first came out. They take great pictures. Seems as though everyone has a camera phone now a days except me. I have lots of pictures I have taken over the years. maybe I will dig out some and post them. They are not the quality of your stuff though. Herb
February 14, 20178 yr I have taken literally thousands of pictures, but until recently I never took a picture of my work. I guess I just figured nobody would WANT to see it. And Herb, I don't have a camera phone either. John

Thats the way mine were before I retired, Although I was required to take progress photos of the job as it progressed and accident photos and safety photos ,and photos of conditions that might be hazardous, but all those went to a job file in the main office in case we got sued. Even after I retired I didn't take pictures of the making of anything, just the final results after I fixed all the goof-ups. Herb

February 15, 20178 yr Author I guess I'm in the same boat as some of you are in...My wife a few years ago bought me the cheapest thing Walmart had , called a trac phone, or called something like that. You buy minutes instead of paying a bunch each month. It seemed like she bought 800 minutes. Now , three of four years later and looking just now, I have 682 minutes left. I have never carried it with me and I don't answer it. Yes it does ring about once a month but hey I didn't do anything for someone to be calling me so... I really don't know what buttons to push to answer it ,so, life is still good. Kids say, well what if you have a heart attack, I say then it must be my time......I started out answering each call but they were all recordings and thats what used up my minutes. I want to take all my minutes with me when I die... That is legal ain't it????...My phone sits here beside the computer looking real important 24 hours a day....Heck, if someone was to come by to say hi, I would show them my phone.......But I don't ever give out the number... But now I still want everyone to post pictures of things they are building or thinking about building if for no other reason for me to have more things to consider to maybe build. I find piddling in the shop passes time for me and I enjoy it. I did try to grow a garden but hey, sitting and watching radishes grow is very boring. I do enjoy herding the zero turn. But hey, grass grows about as quick as radishes. I live on a lake but I can't stand to eat the fish so catching and letting them go gets boring. Pictures, pictures more pictures....
February 15, 20178 yr I don't own a smart phone. Guess I'm not smart enough to learn how to use one. My daughter did buy a cell phone for me that apparently does have a camera . I do have a cheapie point and shoot camera. Looking at what others have done is enjoyable, and definitely educational, especially when the progression of a project is pictured. I agree, more of us, myself included, should take more photos of our work and post the photos here. Funny, years ago i was a photography nut. Had a good SLR several lenses, and even had my own darkroom where I developed and printed B&W and color photos , along with Kodachrome slides. Now I hardly pick up a camera.
February 15, 20178 yr Hey guys, all due respect, but virtually every topic in any given project forum is full of images of other people's work. For example, go to the main woodworking forum at http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forum/27-general-woodworking/ Scroll down and open most of the topics, and it's someone showing off their work with images. Same with our Turners forum, if you go here http://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forum/28-wood-turners/ Scroll down and more than 7/8ths of the topics are projects with images. I do not get the whole idea that folks are not posting their share of projects. Not only are our forums full of projects, perhaps spend some time in the Gallery and fire up some discussions on the images rolling in there as well. There has been some pretty decent activity with project images in our galleries. Just pushing back on the whole idea that folks are not posting project images, they/we/me are!
February 15, 20178 yr John, we know there are lots of photos posted here, but I do know that some of us could do more. Just a reminder for those of us who tend to neglect that asset.

February 15, 20178 yr @Smallpatch, when I first saw that "Bond" tablet I thought I was looking into my own drawing kit, it's exactly what I use for drawing up or sketching up some of my projects and transferring templates from other resources. I love pencil and curves and rulers and compass, it's relaxing. Thanks for sharing Jess.

February 15, 20178 yr Just now, It Was Al B said: Making a correction in my statement concerning developing Slides.. Kodachrome slides had to be processed professionally by Kodak. The slides I processed were Ektachrome and Fujichrome films
February 15, 20178 yr Kodak finally relented and sold Kodachrome processing chemicals but since it's a tenth-of-a-degree, tenth-of-a-second process, it wasn't very practical for the home user.

Personally, I enjoy watching my radishes grow and my beans, corns, peas, lettuce, tomatoes...well you get it and gripe as I may, I also enjoy the mowing season; beats shoveling, blowing, dealing with snow a whole lot...but hey, that's just me...Since I have to clear the garage to do much woodworking, cold, snowy, rainy nasty weather nixes it, but when I can I really like the smell of wood...like others here, I'm not so good at taking photos or getting them transferred from one device to another...I'll take it as a challenge "Coach Patch" to improve my performance...just don't throw me off the team yet John, you are absolutely right...some great project threads going on all the time...said it before, but will restate it, TPW is better than any project magazines coming through the mail...and it's free... Some guys (gals) don't participate much in the forum banter but post some outstanding gallery projects pics...if you haven't looked lately take a view at @oleglenn and @Dale Felice scroll work...beautiful detailed work... ...and as Forrest Gump would say..."and that's all I got to say about that..."
