I've done a few repairs and alterations in old houses, so I know a little about the old ways. Cast iron pipe with the belled ends. Stand the next pipe into the bell, pack it with oakum, and pour in molten lead for the seal. Sooo much easier with today's ABS! Glue, shove it together, and it's done.
