January 6, 20179 yr I would like to change the drawer slides in my kitchen cabinets to Full Extension Ball Bearing type. I've seen there are many different lengths and I don't know where to measure for the slides. Any advice and help would be appreciated. I think I'll need the rear mount brackets also. There's a piece of plywood screwed to the back of the cabinets to strengthen the back. Most likely a place to screw the brackets to hold them.
January 6, 20179 yr Wally, I am thinking whatever the depth of your drawers are would be about the length of the slides you need. If you are mounting with a rear bracket, they may need to be the depth of the cabinet minus the bracket. I would go to Woodworkers Supply (online) and look at all of the drawer slide options they have and look at the downloads they provide on the installation recommendations for the particular slides.
January 6, 20179 yr measure from the face of the face frame to the back of the cabinet... select the glide or nears length of glide that will fit... block the back of the cab to hold the end of the glide if it won't reach to the back of the cab... or filler between the glide and the wall of the cab...
January 6, 20179 yr my rule of thumb: cabinet depth - 2" = length of glide. so for 24" deep cabinets, I use 22" glides. allows room for rear boards that secure the cabinet to the wall (usually 3/4")

November 10, 20196 yr Some slides fasten the the rear wall. If you get that kind then they need to be a little longer than your drawers.
November 11, 20196 yr You can buy full extension rear and side sockets...usually you want to usd a 22" full extension drawer slide for a 24" deep cabinet...
November 12, 20196 yr You can buy a lot of these items at Custom Service Hardware....CSH is there professional end and I believe Woodworkers supply was there hobby site...
November 12, 20196 yr Why are you moving from ball bearing to other types of slides? It would be helpfull to understand more on your reason for the replacement. Generally speaking ball bearing are the most heavy duty slides out there.

November 12, 20196 yr It's not uncommon to want to move from a side mount roller to a full extension drawer slide. They both require a 1/2 on each side or a drawer box 1" less than the opening it goes into.... Simple measure the drawer sides and that should give you the length needed. If you have a cabinet 24"deep and a drawer box 22" deep then you need a 22 drawer slide....
November 12, 20196 yr The side mounts require the 1/2 on each side of the drawer but won't work if you have the older center style drawer slides metal or wooden...
November 13, 20196 yr Sorry for the mis reading but now that you are on ball bearing slides please look into the soft close variants. I have ball bearing slide in my router table which is loaded with several routers and when I close it I have to make sure my fingers are clear. Same would apply to a drawer full of pots and pans. Sometimes friction is our friend.
November 13, 20196 yr If you want soft close you will have to find the brand ,price and instructions. At this point we can help... Some soft close require a specific drawer box.... Edited November 13, 20196 yr by BillyJack
