Got my new 2017 tool catalog

Last week I got the 2017 catalog in the mail and I will say for all the new name brand lines Grizzly is adding to their already large catalog they seem to be trying for more business...

So between projects I spent all after noon looking at every page.. And recalled the joys I use to have when a Sears or Wards catalog came in the mail.

Which reminds me of the story I just today read about things being returned after Christmas because of one or another reasons. The worse reason for something being returned was after the partys, superbowl or Christmas the big screen tv's was taken back for a refund. It was used to impressed the friends so was not needed anymore this year. And if packages are opened and lots were used and laundried stores can't resale things like that which 90% of all returned items are sent to the land fill. Even salvage companies don't get to compete for lots of that. Sad how america has been become and maybe Sears might have started most of it and now Sears will probably go by the way side because of it.

Just ordered mine on-line this week Patch...haven't ordered a hard copy for a couple of years just tried using the on-line version.

Like you missed being able to sit in my chair, turn every page, fold over corners, mark up pages for my "wish list" and all...yeah I know one can do all that on-line, but I too remember the excitement of getting the new Sears-Roebuck, Montgomery Wards, J.C. Penny's seasonal catalogs...guess I'm too much of an old phart to change...

As for the TV, I finally broke down and bought a SMART TV a few months back to replace my 20+ yr old model...Did a lot of research on-line...ended up buying a "name brand", "refurb" model through Wally World...same warranty as new model and about 45% less with free delivery to my local store. The box looked a bit worse for the wear (had been opened and resealed, but all hardware, books, remote inside were in original sealed packages. I suspect it had been opened, used once (if at all) then returned...works perfectly...

It's a cool catalog, I love perusing it and just seeing what is out there. Have not purchased anything for a few years, but it's become a good reference bible for tools.

I too remember looking at the sears and monkey ward Christmas Wish Books (I think that is what they called them) when they came out a couple of months before Christmas. I would look through them and dream of all of the toys they hnd.

I even took one to see Santa to show him exactly what I wanted.

Mine arrived last week also and I've been sitting here flipping through it off and on for several days.

Sears announced this week they are closing there retail store here. Kmart closed last year. Seems when the merged the business plan didn't work.

I loved getting a Sears catalog as a kid and loved going to the store and buying warm Cashews.

Not me. I got drool all over the tool section! Ok, so I was a bit of a weird kid!

It was just announced that both KMart and Sears are closing in Anderson, S.C. and in Greenwood, S.C. I figured that Sears was going to be milked and tossed aside. Ace Hdwe took on Craftsman, and I heard that Sears was trying to sell their Kenmore brand. Once they divest themselves of everything they can, they will probably go bankrupt. There's plenty of competition out there!

Happy days...in the midst of January weather woes, my new Grizzly Catalog showed up today! Let the Dreamin' begin! :D

I really like their band saws....I  am trying to limit my tool buying to what I will actually use.

The only major tools I could see myself buying would be

#1. Band saw...not sure what I want to do yet....

#2. Router-I like the smaller Festool Router, I may buy it in a few years, what I ahve works fine now, no need to add more.

#3. Veritas Low angle Jointing plane...I have a #8 Ulmia woodie, a fantastic #6, and a #7 C that work very well....but I like the low angle plane. And PMV-11

#4. I could also see adding a low angle jack from Veritas, with PMV 11.  Brian, who shares my shop with me, has a low angle Wood River Jack and I like the way it feels.  Been using my trusty #5 Type 13 Stanley for 30 plus years so no hurry, not sure I would even want to give up shop space for the LAJ...but I might not mind one.

#5. Would not mind the small plow plane or Medium shoulder plane from Veritas.

Other than the band saw....no hurry on the above.  I can do everything I need with what I have....

What she don't know won't hurt you! ;)

John

If there were out houses today a Grizzly catalog would hang in them.

Its the when she finds out part that's sort of like running several digits through a table saw....

They seem like very good products....and from what I hear, fantastic customer service.

Okay, here's Plan A: Convince her you need a bandsaw (the largest item) to build something that SHE likes/will appreciate/whatever. Once she agrees to THAT, purchase said item, and stow a plane or two in the packaging. This will make it easier to smuggle said items into the house. When (or IF) she notices said items in your workshop, she will inquire about them (Women are an inquisitive bunch!). Look confused, and say: "Those? I've had them for years!" Glad to be able to help a fellow woodworker! ;)

John

P.s.... If this plan DOESN"T work, let me know. I can recommend a good divorce lawyer. (Plan B)!

I can't complain, she has never said no once if we could afford something...and that is in 28 years of marriage....not that I haven't been tempted...!
