Black Friday, Nov 25, 2016 What's on your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

Here we are at Black Friday 2016. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and got to be with Family and/or friends, eat too much food, watch some football and get a nap.

We had a great time and my two brothers got to come to my house for thanksgiving.

Not much went on in the shop but we did manage to get the new safe upstairs and in place. It took at least eight of us to get the 700 lb safe up seven steps.

IMG_7268.JPG

so so we got it off the trailer and in the front door. We then laid it down on the steps, put a long pull strap around it and started up. We had four people at the top pulling on the strap and at least four at the bottom pushing.

It took all we had to get it to the top

and finally it was on its side at the landing.

after a bit of moving around we got it in place and set up.

I'm glad that is over.

Saturday we are headed to the Nashville Flea Market for the day.

What is is on your agenda this weekend?

IMG_7264.JPGWho's the good-looking young fella in the middle? :D

John (gathering Brownie points!)

And no holes in the dry wall!!

On my bench are all my plumbing tools. The inside shut off valve, to an outside spigot, no longer seals- hey it's only 66 years old- going to replace it on Saturday. Pretty easy job but in an awkward place. Fire Extinguishers at the ready!

Finish on the Cherry Box was messed up..big time.....had to strip it almost all off, and try again......

Testing a new routine....plain old smelly BLO, then a rattle can of WATCO clear Gloss Lacquer.     Have a Stanley SW No. 3 , a 24" long level.     Using it as the guinea pig for the "new finish".

Trying to get the box done before scope surgery on this old knee on Dec. 15.......Won't get much done after that.   Figures..."Rogue 1"  comes out the day AFTER surgery.....I am so sure I can sit in a cinema with a sore knee......any bets?

Not much done in the shop in the last few days. Guests arrived Tuesday and Wednesday. They leave tomorrow afternoon. It's been great having family around.

We all went out for a great Mexican meal last night. Three of them have birthdays close together around Thanksgiving, so although we celebrated on Thursday, we did it again last night. The restaurant served them Baked Alaska as a gift.

If it warms up today, we'll take the Polaris' out for some desert adventuring.

Monday, all will be back to as normal as it ever gets around here. Me in the shop and Momma in her quilting room.

I am sure glad you got that new safe. I know how much you have worried about people finding out the secret location of your "Wood Stash" so now you have the map stashed in your new safe away from prying eyes. Though I am sure that the next time out to Alabama I will have to ride the donkey again blindfolded to go out to your secret wood stash.:P:lol:

Not much happening in my neck of the woods. Tami's Mom drove in from Yuma, AZ on Thanksgiving morning and she will be heading back home on Sunday. We went to a big "Craft Fair" that they have every year over Thanksgiving weekend and saw a bunch of interesting stuff. Tami bought a couple of things for Christmas gifts but nothing really jumped out at me. There were a number of woodworking booths with stuff, but most of them were not selling real well as it is tough to make a decent profit here in So. California as the wood prices are so high so profit margins are very low. The majority of the booths were more estrogen based with aprons, kids clothing and various trinkets to hang on the walls as well as a number of candle and soap makers which really messed up my sinuses and allergies. The big sale item was the "Cookie Bake" seller. They had a line out the door 100+ deep waiting to get in and buy the fresh baked cookies for Christmas. I walked through the store and the smells were wonderful and they were selling out fast.

Today I will have to mow the front yard and clean things up so that I can put up the Nativity Scene and hang the lights across the front of the house.

Here is a photo of when Tami and I went down to John Moody's place in Alabama getting ready to saddle up the donkeys and make the blindfolded ride to Moody's Secret Wood Stash.

I took a cue from you and went to Gander Mountain and bought a safe (slightly smaller, mine's a 25 gun model). We didn't have stairs to navigate, so my 3 of my grandsons and I used the tractor and forks to get it to the basement door, then wheeled it in. Still, it was 500# and a lot of effort.

made a picture frame today.  made it too small.  making another one later.  sigh.

Been fighting a cold all week, went to the doc today and found out it's gone onto bronchitis, as a result I haven't been in the shop much this week at all. Instead, I have been working on designs in inkscape for some of the honey dipper lids the local bee farm lady buys from me. She asked if I could put a beehive on them.   I haven't burned any of these yet but past efforts have gone well so I'm anxious to see how they look when I get them on a lid.

I hope to feel well enough tomorrow or Monday to get a few lids turned and give them a go.

Early this year, a young man from Huntington(14) was at  wrestling camp. Sadly, he suffered heat stroke and died about a week later. It happens his grandparents are neighbors and good friends of ours and they are still devastated by the loss. She asked a couple days ago if I could make a Christmas ornament in the shape of a football with his jersey number on it as he was  active in that sport as well. Quite an honor and I hope I can do him justice. Other than that, not much going on, kind of hard to believe the rush to make ornaments and small items for Christmas shows is pretty much over. As soon as I get this one special ornament done I'll go back to turning  all those walnut bowl blanks I roughed out a couple weeks ago.

Steve

Sorry to hear about your bronchitis, but like the art work.

Herb

John glad you got that monster up the stair without injury.

Allen the next time you go down to the stash just call and we can get the satellite view up and follow you right in there and don't tell John we will then have a stash.

Steve hope you get to feeling better after a weekend of rest.

Did get a little turning done after getting most of the Christmas lights placed in the yard. I turned 3 more rooks (pics later) . Today I finished the lights (I think if they break I will not replace some of this). Then got into the shop and did the first knight. Did not look right at first and I had myself weighing options, but after last cut looks good and now for some sanding.

Steve, best on that memorial ornament (though I know they will be proud with your work). Yet another tragedy, best wishes to the grieving family.

Fred I was looking at that one and almost bought it. The price was so close I went ahead and bought the bigger one. I used the recommendation for woodworking shops and tools, "Buy the biggest one you can get and it will still be too small!"
