Needs a new box built

As this one needs to be tossed out..old box.JPG

Bottom has broken out the sides.  and the back.   May salvage the hinges.  Unsure about the lid, just yet.    Still need a new home for these toys..

toys.JPG

Rosewood, Brass & Steel.  needs a better home.   Old box has had a cat pee on it a couple times....time to toss it out.   Found some chunks of Cherry...

cherry boards.JPG

Mostly 4/4 rough sawn Cherry, left over from a Candy Box build.    Figured I could resaw them down to 1/2" thick stock, and built a new box?

first cutting.JPG

Marked a center line, and made a resaw cut on the bandsaw.   Roughly 1/2" thick on both.    Takes a while to saw, too.....

second cutting.JPG

Two boards done.  Shorty is because the 4/4 was tilted at the start of the cut.    I merely cut off the weird end.   The blanks behind these two?

bead board.JPG

Might find a use for this "Bead Board" ,  maybe around the lid?    Ok, the bolt holding the thrust bearing in the upper guide on the bandsaw  went a-rolling off the bearing, and onto the floor....somewhere.  Used a prybar to move the bearing out a bit.....seemed to run better without the bolt......Bearing seems to be locked up, anyway.    Someday, I get a new bearing.  let the entire bearing just rotate along.   still have a few more boards to resaw..

wood supply.JPG

All marked up, and ready for the saw.    Knee is acting up....thanks to having to drive the Boss around this afternoon.   Had it "pop" while walking out of the store.   Hobbled out to the van.

Right now, sitting and resting the knee.   maybe later I can replace a light fixture  at the backdoor?    Trying  a "Finger and a half" of Crown Royal Vanilla, neat...to see if that helps the knee...

Corner joints this time?    Maybe 1/2" through Dovetails?    handcut , of course.   Maybe a different layout for the toys?    Deeper box?     The BIG bevel gauge is a 12" model.   stay tuned.....

Anyone see a bolt laying around?

That would be my prescription, taken as needed ;)

Just curious, are you rubbing it on your knee like a liniment? :PTrying to figure out how it gets down into the knee joint? Sorry to hear it's causing you grief again...gonna have to move your recliner down to the dungeon to on trips up/down the stairs. ;)

Looking forward to following another project build...probably should rub in another finger & a half before bed-time just to make sure it soaks in good...

Got taken to the movies tonight, to see Doctor Strange......good movie.     Wasn't allowed to drive though.....fat fingers, you know;)

Might see how things go Sunday......

Ok, knee is feeling better today.   Got the rest of the boards resawn

resaw.JPG

Lighter wood seems to be a bit of sap wood...

sap wood.JPG

Might be a little rough to get any more out of this chunk.   Those longer, wider boards, needed to be crosscut to something I could work with....

crosscuts.JPG

Longer ones are @ 13" out of the 25" long boards.  After some remodeling work on the bench, I could start to surface the longer ones to S4S....

cambered jack.JPG

Cambered iron in a Stanley #5c.  Designed to take all that roughness down ...fast.   Came back with a less cambered Millers Falls #11 Junior Jack plane..

face planed.JPG

To get rid of the roughness from the first plane, and then a bit with a #3 sized plane to smooth it all down

smooth plane.JPG

Made by Millers Falls for Sears, sold as a Craftsman #3C....with a smooth sole. Aka M-F No.8

Set up the leg vise with a keeper clamped to the bench's side.   Jointed one edge smooth and straight...well. at least straight.   Combo square set to the width of the narrow end.    Mark a line along to show where to plane the other edge to..

jointer work.JPG

Pine keeper to keep the piece from moving down as I plane.  I used the two smooth soled planes back there.  Took awhile, But i soon had all four of the long side pieces surfaced..

three planes.JPG

Might have to "dress " the ends a bit more?   Which leaves all of these to do next time i wander down to the shop...

next batch.JPG

Might take awhile?   That"fat" one in the middle?    Wasn't part of the resaw stack.   leftover from another project.    Cherry, so maybe it will find a place in the new box.

Camera battery needed charged up, I need some Lunch......breaktime!    Stay tuned, as I may  wander back to the shop for a while this evening...

Nice...once you got the resawn boards smooth down, some pretty nice grain showed up...gonna be a sweet looking piece I predict. Glad the "liniment" worked on the 'ole knee.

Man you got it going on. I'll be following along!

Great Work - I do enjoy your journey through the various steps on your projects. They also look really awesome when completed!

Violated one shop rule this morning......Never Work on a Monday.

The lighter coloured wood ( sap wood?)  was cut to length, most had to be jointed along their edges.   A few needed scrubbed down in thickness.    Added a cherry accent piece in the center....

Most of the mating edges matched up.   Got out the pipe clamps and the Elmer's......then the fighting began.:o    One pipe clamp wouldn't lock in place......another wouldn't stand up and stay standing up. Replace the one clamp and things started to clamp up...after standing the one back up for the 7th or 8th time.    Pieces wanted to rise up out of the clamps....framing hammer told them otherwise:ph34r:.  Got the third ( middle) clamp in place....lay down clamp at it again.    More hammer work.  Panel is now all clamped up, and almost  flat.   Cussing was enough to make R Lee Ermy :wacko:blush.

Photos if and when I wander back down there.    Top of the bench is too full to do too much else.

Never work in the shop on a Monday......

Well, I stumbled back down to the scene of the crime.....

clamped up.JPG

Meh...at least it didn't blow up at me.   Brown board is the Cherry accent piece.   Handle sticking into the view?

Lil'Framer.JPG

Leftover from my days on the wall crews.  24oz Lil Framer, aka "The War Club", Twas the first hammer I could grab this morning.

As for those extra LONG pipes?

long pipe.JPG

For the stuff I do...I don't think I NEED a couple 5' long clamps.    Now, IF I can just find my pipe cutter.....and,IF there is threads out there at the ends, I can cobble a couple more clamps...someday

Might let this set for today,  don't want to rush things on a Monday, and spend the rest of the week fixing things.    Stay tuned...

Weelll, been setting long enough, Time to remove the clamps...put the dang things away.....

out of the clamps.JPG

Toys for tomorrow's chores.    That thing to the right?     Takes the place of that mitresaw  back there..

mitre box.JPG

Stanley No.358......can't get there from here, as they say...

blocked path.JPG

Too much sh......er...stuff in the way.  All I needed to do was four crosscuts.   Got out that GEM Mitre Box and a fancy saw..

GEM.JPG

Four sides were squared up on one end.   2@ 12-1/2" and 2@ 11-1/2"  somewhere like that....  I squared the one end first, and then cut the worst end off at the measurement needed... Mitrebox is a Folding model, so four screws are keeping it from doing just that.  Had to tighten the guide, after the saw was place in it.

guide.JPG

Held in place by a single screw,of course.   Didn't seem to do to badly..

saw cut.JPG

Saw is sharp.   Cuts a bit fast, too.  Got all four sides trimmed to size.   laid out the toys..

toys.JPG

Most of the tools I'll need to cut dovetails with tomorrow. That Dovetail bit?  That is my  marking gauge to lay out dovetails with.  Marking gauge for the lines to cut to, a knife to deepen them,  the rest are as needed.  I do pins first, then use them to lay out the tails.   I'll set the panel off to the side for a few days, before the planes start to abuse it.    Someone wonders what is ON my bench?    About half my shop is right now.    Nice thing about doing dovetails tomorrow...one) it ain't Monday, and two) I get to sit on a shop stool most of the day.    Stay tuned, the "complicated stuff" is about to start...

Off to another great start...fitting to spend time in the "dungeon" today (Tuesday) since it's election day...at least something good will result from your efforts.

I'm dialed in, tubes warmed up and antenna rotated...waiting for next episode:P

Can't buy any booze until after the polls close, so...

pins.JPG

Might as well do all of these things.....Film later today.......I have all four corners conneted up.   The camera died....so I will be awaiting it to recharge back up.    Might start a part 3?

squared away.JPG

Looking good, so far?

Dovetails looking good. Saw this in a Highland Woodworking video and looks neat.David Barron Magnetic dovetail guide . If I had a lot of them to do this might be the way to go. Be sure to tab down and watch the video.

Looks like you're off and running (ok no puns about the election or your knee:P)...Dovetails look great so far...

I'll be watching for the possible channel change...hang in there polls close at 0800...

Liquor stores open at 0801...gonna be a long night so pace yourself:P...we'll all probably be taking 1-1/2 fingers of "medicine" as needed.:D

You are moving right along!
