November 5, 20169 yr Popular Post After I posted some pictures on another thread, I thought maybe this project needed its own thread. This was made from maple slab wood from a WoodMizer Portable mill operation of a friend of mine. He would call me If he was sawing some logs of interest and I would come out and scrounge through the slab pile before he cut them up for fire wood. In return I would make him some things from lumber he furnished. This particular piece I made for myself . The logs were western maple logs that were 20-"-24" in diameter and had seasoned for 2 years in his yard. I didn't have any drawings, but had seen some of these Hi Boys in some of the magazine articles, so made a variation of one. I also incorporated some hidden compartments into the design. Herb

November 5, 20169 yr Excellent Herb. I like the attention to detail like the grain match on the small drawers.
November 5, 20169 yr Herb, you just classed up the joint! Great project and wonderful work! So since this came from a log, you had to resaw each of those components down to the final thickness, just the prep for this project is mind boggling! Thanks so much for sharing this Herb, beautiful, absolutely awesome! I love, love love, the design at the bottom at the skirt, I love those lines, thank you again for posting your inspiring project, this really pushes some of us to do more with their hands, including myself, great job sir.
November 5, 20169 yr Herb that even beats the cat's meow. What was the finish, it looks very transparent?

Yes, Dan, that really adds to the the effect. The ends were made from 5 narrow boards matched the best I could and glued together. The legs were made from more of a straight grained material as there was a lot of hand detail work making them and I didn't want to fight the tearout of the swirly grain, besides not having pieces the right dimension to make them without gluing up blanks. It took about 4 hour to make each a leg. The front pieces and the sides are doweled and glued together. The drawers slide on runners, which work quite well.
