November 3, 20169 yr Popular Post I made a couple of light houses for my wife and her sister a few years ago. I installed the small sockets and used 220 volt bulbs. Those bulbs last for years in 110 V use. Both bulbs are have been service and are still OK. I was visiting friends in a coastal town in the South Carolina and found a lot of good stuff to use on the one, even a old sea captain to put in the top. The sea birds are on a wire and look real Edited November 3, 20169 yr by Ron Altier correct things
November 3, 20169 yr Those are super neat, Ron! An electrician buddy taught me that trick of using high voltage bulbs in 110v sockets- especially where the bulbs are difficult to reach like vaulted ceilings
November 3, 20169 yr Great job,Ron, I have always admired model makers. Working on miniature items was not mine to do. Big hands and big fingers are a disadvantage. You did well getting everything in the right proportions. I like it. Herb Edited November 3, 20169 yr by Dadio
November 3, 20169 yr Very nice Ron. The white one looks very much like ones we have here in coastal New England. Plenty of material here to look at for your next vacation.
November 3, 20169 yr Way cool Ron...great detail...the white one made me think of the one on Tybee Island, GA.
November 3, 20169 yr Very nice, Ron...captain looks happy...I would be too if I were there... The detail keeps ya looking for more...very nice...
November 3, 20169 yr Author GrandpaDave, The taller one is about 30". Tybee Island My brother lived there most of his life and I visited there many times. I did use it for inspiration. One time I was there and they wouldn't let anyone in. An overweight man had climbed up the steps and had a heart attack at the top. They had a terrible time getting him back to the ground.

November 3, 20169 yr I've been in about a dozen lighthouses, and in most of them you would need some type of sling to lower an incapacitated person. One slip, and the would-be rescuer would be answering the call of gravity too! Not a lot of railings or other restraints in the older ones. John

It also crossed my mind if he had had the heart attack at the bottom and the hospital was on top of the light house it would have been worse. There I go again, thinking dumb thought ,need to get back in the shop to clear my thoughts to good things. Herb

Our summer vacation destination was Savannah for several years running and we loved going out to Tybee. It sort of was like stepping back in time...much more relaxing, laid back and friendly than on Hilton Head or Charleston, S.C. area islands. Some of the best seafood I've ever eaten too. More than once while swimming and enjoying the South beach area, the dolphins would come in and swim around so near you could touch them. It was especially peaceful going out early morning with coffee & pastries sitting on the beach and watching the sunrise and fishing boats head out...well until the seagulls and pelicans came flocking in at you. It was a place where I really could relax while on vacation. It has lost some of it's charm though since developers have come in. Don't know how long ago the incident occurred you describe, but a few years ago, we encountered either the same or a like situation. Who knows maybe we saw each other that day.
