Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners November 2, 2016

First Wednesday in November already and K-Mart has had their Christmas displays out for 3 weeks. It did serve to remind me that I need to get my butt in gear and get those Christmas presents made.

 

I recently watched a video from Carl Jacobson. It is #5 in his series- "Back To Basics". In this one he discusses a sharpening jig for the grinder. Although his is a commercial version, it is not too difficult to create a shop made jig that can do the same thing. He also mentions the Abranet sanding mesh. I have been using this product myself and really like it. The video also includes the creation of a seam ripper handle as Mr. Jacobson demonstrates several cutting methods.

Over the past several "Wednesday's.." we have been featuring Patriot Turners. One of our most prolific turners, and previously featured- Ron Altier has posted more of his work. For myself, I did get a little time at the lathe. This will be a Christmas present for some friends of ours. Chips and cheese serving dish made from walnut. It still needs some more sanding and a finish. I think I'll highlight the textured accent surface with acrylic paint to compliment the marble tile. The bottom foot will need to be finished as well-

Wow Lew!  Love your serving dish, the marble center is a nice accent.

 

Carl has a lot of great videos.  I saw on another forum that he has the most views on his You Tube channel than any other wood turner.

Lew that tray is great. What did you use to texture the rim, as I do not recognize the design?

Gerald, I was fortunate enough to score a Sorby texturing tool. I used the texturing cutter to make the pattern. I still haven't fully mastered it and the spiraling tool leaves me totally frustrated.
