October 23, 20169 yr A friend had several trees taken down recently and set me up with a few chunks of hickory firewood. So today I pulled out the mallet and splitting wedges and the big bandsaw and cut them into 2 1/2 and 3 inch slabs. All the ends got sealed with my potpourri crock pot candle wax. The shop smelled good all day too! They are stacked. Now the wait is on for drying. Not quite an entire hand tool post so forgive me for that. Just raw material manufacture for future chisel repairs etc. Inagural run for the big bandsaw too! I think it and I are going to be friends! Edited November 21, 20178 yr by Ron Dudelston tags added

This is a benchmark of couse. This wood is Shagbark Hickory so pretty dense and yes, the grain is really straight in many of the pieces. Should work well if it doesnt split badly while drying. I just have to be patient.

Yup! The fresh cut wood smelled good and the wax was fom old candles so the shop was pretty floral and fruity too!
October 24, 20169 yr Nice score on the Hickory. Furnace is going to be running. Add some extra duct hangers and stack them on them. Be dry in no time.
