Barn Sale Skimpy Picks

Featured Replies

Dragged the Boss along this morning.....a BarnSale.     LOTS of Lumber for sale...no cash for the big stuff.....figures...

Snooped around all over the place in that old barn.    I did see one of the LONGEST bone saws ever ( already have one)  Underneath it was a saw till type of tool box.   Only two saw shaped objects inside.....but, nearby was a saw's jointer.     I also found a small  Perfection screwdriver..

"Perfection"  is a style of handle they used.   I cleaned up both of these treasures, and added a file to the jointer.     Used to "joint" the saw's teeth down to all the same height.   A better view?

The bolt head goes down when you run this along the teeth of a saw, the frame keeps the jointer square to the plate.  Screwdriver was a "biggie"

Cleaned up nicely?    Total price for these two?   $1.    The file I already had, as well as the zig-zag.    Kind of a slow weekend...

Nice picks.  Learned new today, first I heard of a saw jointer.  Thanks

I have a larger one of those screwdrivers I picked up somewhere. Someone replaced one of the rivets with an engineered solution. Looks terrible. I use it to burnish scrapers.

Was that the one near Huntsville? I wasn't able to make it, but when I looked it up it didn't look like they had all that much. They did however have straw listed, and i could use 10-12 bales of that...but I wasn't able to work things out.

Fred, Not sure if you have a Rural King near you...most in my area carry straw for re-sale...usually  a bit pricey compared to farm picked, but not prohibitive. Some Tractor Supplies resell also; either might be able to give you a lead where to buy locally or check the bulletin boards  at those locations. Our big ACE/Sears Home-store also re-sells. Check the Farm listings on CL too for your local.

Going prices on CL in central IN right now ~$3/bale...re-sellers above getting from $5-6/bale...I've negotiated with ACE before on quantities of 10 or more for $0.50 off/bale.

I'm willing to pay $3/bale for clean, bright straw. But the weather around here (I guess) made the wheat crop an iffy thing the past couple of years, and the straw was going for $5....and still in scarce supply. Nearest Rural King is probably 40 miles away, not sure I'll go that far to get it...thanks anyway. We do have TSC (everywhere) but the ones here don't have straw. I need to do a fair amount of reseeding so will need it for that.

Yep, that was the one at Huntsville.     LOTS of lumber, though.     Not sure where they had the straw at.    There are Rural Kings in Springfield and Huber Heights.   Not sure about Lima.

Supply & demand by region...wheat crop production cycle (and lifestock) varies through the mid-west and many farmers run the straw out the back thru the chopper rather than rake and bale; requires storage besides labor to bale, load, transport and put up. Many are now baling in large square or round bales for own use or to sell to commercial users.

Clean, bright (this years crop) is great but not necessary for  grass seed cover...as long as straw is not molded, "old" straw works equally well...it's just cover and mulch for the grass to germinate and hold in place. Works equally well for livestock bedding too. As I noted, I see it listed pretty often in Farm & Garden listing on CL in our area. I've bought 3 y/o straw that looked as good as new crop; was in and dry and twine quality still very good.
