Way too much like work.     Added the extra parts to one end of the holder blank.   Set the blank up in the vise..then had to take the Boss to lunch and Walmart.    Piece of a Sausage,Egg, & Cheese sammich got lodged in the wrong spot...had a choking fit.    Finally got it out.

Ok, set up the large brace with a large bit,  marked a center line, and started to attempt to drill a few holes..

start up.JPG

First hole went a bit sideways, next ones were a tad better.    Trying to get that big-arsed bit deep enough..

deep settings.JPG

Something like this.    Found out real fast which drill bit needs sharpened, too.    I was stuck using just two bits...

small bit.JPG

Last two were with a smaller bit.    Again one went a little off, second one was a bit better.   Marked a few more lines, time for a saw, or two...

rip saw.JPG

Just an old Keystone No. 6-1/2.   Trying to rip rip down the center.....got to a marked depth line.  Put the big saw away, laid the block on it's side, and got a crosscut saw...

crosscut Aldi's.JPG

Hoping the two lines meet where they are supposed to..

Needed to keep drilling, as the shank holes were needed too.    The 16"  long bits were a bit too dull for a brace,  but not for a 1/2" corded drill.   Some chisel work to improve a few cuts, ran a #11 (7/8")  16" long bit in the corded drill.   Finally got things to where a few auger bits will sit in the holders..

auger bits.JPG

Still have to cut slots, so I can lift each bit up and out.  Going to need a LOT of sanding.    Will have to think about this for a day or two....quarter of the way through the holder builds....

Time to just chill out, dry off, and sit the rest  of the evening......too tired for a Beer run, even..

Just wondering, with all of these old tools to work with, where did you find that shiny new crosscut saw with the plastic handle? Sort of like a pair of brown shoes in a room full of tuxedos.:)

Well, Aldi's  WAS selling  them saws....three for $7 awhile back.

Well, the Keystone saw is a 5.5 ppi saw, filed rip.

Between the drills, and the saws...

floor covering.JPG

Made a mess on the floor...again.     Igor  used the  shop broom to fly home for the weekend.....:o

Thinking  there might be an easier way to make this part..... just need to try a few things out.    And, maybe sharpen a drill bit or two..

They were doing that for a living...I'm not.

The "good news" for today.    No surgery required for the knee!     Underside of the kneecap is the cause of the problems.    Or, rather Uncle Arthur (itis) is.    Underside is slowly wearing away and very roughly at that.  I declined a "shot" into the knee today, have to go back to the Family Doc. and see about anti-arthur meds.

Phone company found the problems with the Internet and phone connections......squirrels had been chewing the lines up on the pole.    I got a brand new line installed!   Might have to do something about a couple squirrels, though.

letting the knee rest for today, maybe tomorrow I can find Mr. Gumption and try again on the holders?  Don't want to press my good luck too far today.....

Good to hear the knee isn't wore out all together.  I will keep the fingers crossed in hope that the meds work for you.

Good news that you do not have to have surgery. Sorry about the Uncle Arthur though.

Squirrels can be a pesky problem - I had them chew the wire to my alternator once on my pickup. All squirrels are is a rat with a hairy tail

Great to hear no surgery required...sorry about the arthritis on-set. Wife & I have both been the cortisone shots in the knees route...hurts like h*!! for a day or so, then knee feels like brand new for a few weeks or so, then same 'ole, same 'ole...requested a grease zerk be installed but don't think they found that funny.

City squirrels are mean.....been known to sit in the tree above people around here, and drop a walnut on them......I don't have any Walnut trees around the house.....yet, I keep finding the nuts all over the backyard.   City squirrels are also too scrawny to be any good.

Tried to grow Watermelons in the garden last year, and tomatoes......found a HUGE ground hog out back, sitting up and eating the melon.    A few days later, he was back there, eating the tomatoes, too.    Finally blocked off the hole in the fence....he be looking a little skinny, lately... lives under the neighbor's garage..

Yep; my folks live on outskirts of Lafayette...they are over-run with gray squirrels...they used to gang up on their tom-cat until he'd run for the house.

Where daughter & SIL used to live, the gray squirrels used to whip up on the red ones, and the black squirrels whipped up on all of them. The one's with white tails were the nastiest of all!

Had a raccoon felt he could help himself to garden last year...doesn't come around anymore...think he died of lead poisoning.

This white one, and his tribe lives in Olney IL. They're protected, too.

The other one is the Kiabab squirrel. Lives at the Grand Canyon. Also, protected.

Both are interesting specimens but, pests nevertheless.

Shot the one eating my tomatoes in the head with a high powered pellet rifle.  They are pretty accurate once sighted in.  By the time I got over to him he woke up and ran to his hole but I never saw him again.

My neighbor saw the one that had been destroying his garden strolling along one side of his shed - he grabbed a shovel and met him as he came around the corner. The shovel was put to another use shortly thereafter...............
