October 13, 20169 yr Popular Post teaching the customer's nephew some how to... here we have layout in a way out of square nothing straight room... installation and comping angles to get aesthetics... the kid (16YO) was great... smart.. listened well and had the ability to think 3D+ and paid attention to detail...... 1st week went kinda .. well it went... when his mother saw what he did... did he ever get busy... the DW work was to flatten the walls and give the illusion of straight... flattening the floor was a chore.... closet and SGD were added.... October 13, 20169 yr 16??? Better craftsman than many a "pro" I've seen! Of course, he WAS learning from the best! John
October 13, 20169 yr Makes you realize not all kids are video game nuts. Thanks for teaching him, Stick!
October 13, 20169 yr That is a super start Stick! Wish I could do that with laminate flooring. And kudos to the 16 y.o. As I told my son so many years ago, if he learns how to work with his hands and his head he will never be without work of some type. Cal
October 14, 20169 yr Awesome Stick...really like how you laid out that floor for the room layout. There still are kids out there that really want to learn if someone is willing (& knowledgeable) to take the time a patience to work with them...Kudos to you for being that person.

October 14, 20169 yr Great job of teaching. Question......when doing medallions from scratch do you put it together and then inlay or put it in a piece at a time?

Question......when doing medallions from scratch do you put it together and then inlay or put it in a piece at a time? both.. usually small (≤ 12'') ones get a backer board of 1/8, 3/16 or 1/4 BB ply (sometimes even thicker) and planed to call thickness... the more complex the thicker the backer.. overall stiffness maters... bigger (13~24'') have some type thin BB ply backer.. still bigger (≤ 36'') ones are stick built inside of a frame in place.... ≥ 36'' are stick built and installed just like HW flooring... but still the complexity and size of the pieces dictates the yes or no on the backer and it's thickness.... that one had a door skin as a backer and dropped in... all joints/edges are splined/T&G... all I used was a Bosch 4100, LA block plane, shoulder plane and a Lion Miter Trimmer... before you ask... Urethane based/ moisture-cure mastic/adhesive instead of wood glue.... needed to allow for wood movement...
October 14, 20169 yr Author here you can see the frame is installed and ready for the medallion... in this shot the lay out is being worked out mathematically using the Fibonacci/Golden Mean sequence... the frame and medallion doesn't exist yet in design or size...... if you look at the installed medallion/frame the flooring breaks at all points/sides/edges evenly...
October 14, 20169 yr It's really nice to see a young person willing to learn and doing good at it, also very rewarding for the teacher. Good job Stick.
