Meandered down to the shop this evening.....decided to at least try a few things out.....tried the Aldi's crosscut saw to make four pieces of pine parts...

Aldi's saw.JPG

It do cut fast, and it even tried to cut me thumb.   Got two small holes.  It had hopped up out of a cut.  The 1x6 I am using was a little out of....focus.   Needed a plane to bring things back into line..

end grain.JPG

I planed the two matching sides together, edge grain and end grain.  I wanted them to match, and be at least close to square...Plane didn't do too bad on the end grain..

Millers Falls No. 11 junior jack plane.   Once all of that was done. I got out the combo square, and marked a line 1/2" in from the face of each board.   Bandsaw time...

Not the greatest resaw cut, but it needs a new blade...someday.  Opened this one up like a book..

Well, we have ways.   Grabbed the old cambered jack plane..

Going right across the grain, this isn't the time for see-through shavings.   Once it was close to flat, a second plane came out...

Have a bit of trouble with that old knot....but, I kept at it.    Finally got the four of them close enough to  work with...

Will let this set a day or so.   IF they want to move a bit.   I can come back and mill them flat for joinery work.

Igor, clean up on Aisle #1!

Lower back says it be "Quitting Time!"   So I guess I' meander back upstairs.   Knee held up decently,  lower back didn't.    And, somehow, I picked up a cut on the back of my hand.....didn't feel a thing, looked down and had a leak going on.  Yep, time to quit for the day.

Next up?  Finger joints by mallet & chisel.  Stay tuned...

That is a nice evenings work! Great Job.

It's great to see you start another shop box project. Those slabs are looking good.

Don't over do it. You don't want the knee to totally give out. You and Igor take it easy.

Great start Steven. Love your "plane" work...now try to give that knee a little recup time. Gene's right, you don't want it to lock up on you...

Sounds like maybe situps need to be added to the regimen to get the ole back in shape for all the plane work coming up. A tip I learned is to plane a long board and then  cut. That is do the resaw on full length then plane. This allows you to take a full pass instead of all those short strokes. Also there is something about planing a long board is to step forward as you plane and reduce the bending of the back.

There is a video on that I will try to find.

Well, I thought I had replied this morning........computer issues again.

Bandsaw does not do long boards very well, need to buy a new SHARP blade.    For this shop, small works better than long.   Space issues.

Maybe when I start on them finger joints, I can just sit on the shop stool.    Saw and chisel for the joint work.  Need to set out all the toys..er..TOOLS I need.

Might try to do a glue up......them blanks for the bit holder is too narrow.   Need to add a bit to the width.    We'll see.....If'n I get a bit of shoptime later....

Played "hooky" today from the shop.   Did not even go down the stairs.    Tried to  rest up both the back and the knees.   Trying to find a comfy way  to sit with the knee.....not going too well

Grand BRATS are here for the weekend...Grrrrrrr.    I might have to go and hide out in the shop...for a day or three.....case of Mountain Dews and I'll be fine..

Been fighting the POS modem most of the afternoon.....interwebbie  comes and goes......and locks things up, or loses a post.   Might have it  to where it will stay on.  i hope.

Good boy...you get  gold star by your name today! :P Sometimes you just have to do what is needed even when it's not what you want to do. I've found sometimes placing a pillow under knee helps. Alternate warm/cold packs on top of knee. You can make a warm pack by sowing up a couple bags of rice inside an old pillow case or tight knit old socks; heat in the micro-wave for 30 seconds or so...depends on micro & settings; cold pack like for lunch boxes or even bag of frozen peas/corn...

Find the reset button and do a hard reset/reboot; reset is usually recessed on back/bottom side; takes a bent paper clip to reach.

Well, I went and hid out in the shop today, until Shop Cat Campy "ratted" me out.   Had a board that was ...out of flat....oppisite corners were a bit too thick....

flattened.JPG

The I sat down on the shop stool for awhile....

two sides.JPG

Used a few tools until two sides were done.  Used those to mark where the fingers were on the end pieces....

four sides.JPG

Until I had all four sides done.     Finger joints didn't look too hateful..

finger joints.JPG

Resawed a few blanks for the bit holders...Didn't have a single chunk wide enough, soooooo

blanks.JPG

Made enough blanks to make two glue ups.   But, they needed a bit of work, before I could clamp a set up as a glue up..

plane work.JPG

Stanley No. 5-1/2  seemed to do the job.   Got the first set into the clamps...

glue up.JPG

I can come back tomorrow, and level this out.     Then take a few auger bits, and the bit brace, drill down from one end.    At least until  The flutes can be covered.    After drilling a bunch of sizes, I can then cut away where the  top half of the holes  are.    But, only where I drilled out.    "Below" that point, I need a smaller sized bit to drill just for the shafts/shanks of each bit.  That way, the bits will stay put in the holders.   Have to leave enough room to extract the bit as need from the holder.   That way, I can tip up the end to remove the bit.  Clear as mud?    May just play hooky again, tomorrow.    Stay tuned....

Another Newman original. Straight from the one celled sketch up to the clamps.

You do amazing things in that dungeon.

That is pretty cool!

Ok, first off...I found out a little more about the modem's "issues"   We get both the land line phone and the internet off a pole....line is being shaken up by a few tree lines.   Causes static in the phone ( almost hear someone talking over it) and making the modem go off line.   Trees calm down during the  evening, modem behaves.    CenturyLink is due out here Monday to check the lines, and I think I will just get a new modem to replace theirs......no service charges for equipment that way....

Blank is out of the clamps..1/2arsed squared up, and flattened up.  Turned out to be...1/4" too short in length.   Have those cutoffs from the resaw handy, will add them to one end of the box.   I'll glue them in place, so they will stay put when I cut the box.    Three, maybe four "pages" to this "book".    Fun happens trying to drill into end grain pine, with a brace and bit.     We'll see how that goes.

Errands tomorrow, limits shop time.  Have a big tub of just pliers, most need to be de-rusted.    Slowly wire-wheeling them clean, then an oily wipe down

Played Hooky all day today from the shop

Yard sales were..meh.    Picked a Large RED Hatchet,  a Slate Tomahawk, and a walking stick to help out the knee.

Trying to decide which brace to use....drilling end grain with the augers.    Each has to drill it's own spot, after all.   The 16" long #11 will do the holes for the shanks.   Might get something done Sunday?    besides a run the H-F for sanding belts.     I might get a picture of the edge tool items from today.

Good pick...hate it when it comes to that, but on rough and really uneven terrain worth the hassle. Hang in there my friend!

When I had problems I would highlight what i typed and chose copy.

Then if something would disappear I could just paste what I typed

in the box and try to repost.
