Planning stages, bit box

Featured Replies

Ok, Been doing a wee bit of research......found a few ideas.   Right now, my stash of lumber is mainly 3/4" x 5-1/2" Pine, with a few 1x4s thrown in.     Looking at a box for those auger bits to call home.

Leave the Pine at 3/4"  or resaw....(resaw means a new blade for the bandsaw...)

Will need a lot of hinges, and latches.     Box looks to be a "layer cake" sort of thing.    Each layer can be un-latched to open up, while the rest stay latched.....$$ in brass hardware....

Each layer will need a bottom.   Plywood, or  thinned pine...

Will need a way to keep things from rolling around inside each layer.......drill out a block to  stick the shafts into?    Maybe combine both the bottom panel and the bit holder into a single block?    Drill the holes needed, then cut off halfway along, and halfway in  thickness...

Corner joints?   Might go back to plain old finger joints again.    It would match the rest of the box "set" I have going....

Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is on-line, working out a few details.    Have to have places for a few non-auger bits, as well.

May save the Cherry and Walnut scraps for dividers in the old bit box, to house the squares and bevel gauges.

Depends on what they decide to do with this knee, and when they will be doing it.   May have enough time to cobble something up......

Whatever you decide, I am sure it will look great!

I think you hit on a very good idea. Drill a block to insert base of shafts into. Place the block at the lower part of the box and pin in place with brass pins so that when the top (like a book) is opened the bits can be swung up and removed. I may have to steal that idea.

Have access or a way to haul free pallets? Check CL for your area and/or some of your local businesses. Sometimes you can score red/white oak, yellow pine/white pine or spruce or ????. Just a thought that rolled out.

Just got back from the MRI this morning.    Letting the knee calm down a bit,  got a bit sore all strapped down in the "Dryer".

IF it does calm down, I MIGHT wander down to the shop later.     Looks like I have a week until I get the results, maybe I can get a little bit done?

Might go ahead and make a box, first.    Then cut it into sections to match the drill bit holder blocks.   Blocks may not be all that thick....1" maybe?   Maybe a hair or two more.   Blocks will be nailed in place to become the bottom panel of each "slice".    Open the box up like a "coffee table book"  .     Turn a page to reveal the next bunch of bits.   Will see how a 1x6 pine  works out.

Oak and iron drill bits do not play well with each other.....tannic acid vs iron sort of thing.      Doubt if Pine would react the same way..

Never thought of that, Steve. I'll remember it, though...maybe.
