IMG_0875.JPGThis is nearing the end of turning. Body of the angel is first hollowed , then turned.

IMG_0882.JPGAngel in jig to drill mounting hole for wings. Hollowing did not go this high so usually not a big problem except had to make a jig to get the angle on the wings.

IMG_0873.JPGThe wings are turned to less than 3/16 in thickness.

Notches are cut in wings and sanded.

A ring is turned for the halo. This is progress so far. Still have to do carve the fronts and dye. The glue up and finish. By the way the wood  is crepe myrtle from my yard.

SWEET!!!

Wow, besides great use of resources, the ultimate in personal touch project. Enjoying the journey...keep it coming.

Really nice little tutorial and the pictures are great, thanks for this!

Great photo tutorial, Gerald!

Nice little jig for holding the lady while drilling, too.

Very Nice. Thank you for the step by step

Nice Gerald.  I did some similar years ago but cut the wings on the scroll saw.  I like the spindle sander idea real well.  Much better control I bet.

Gerald,

Using crepe myrtle is not something I would have thought of using.  I always figured that it is a softer wood, but it has a beautiful color and you did a great job.  One thing I would do differently is to turn a piece to fit up the bottom of the angel bottom to support the wood when you bore the holes for the wings.  That would be to support the outer portion of the body.  No charge!

Thanks Steve. That little jig does the support. In addition the hollow does not go all the way up to the drilled hole and therefore the upper part and head is supported in the jig. Have done about 50 this way and no casualties yet.

A secondary idea came along as a result of a failure in turning the angels and turned out to be Carolers with tophat.

Color is added and clear coat (lacquer deft). As a final touch a scarf for the Caroliers.

Like that snowman a lot. Nice work Gerald

Steve

way cool...

Really nice Gerald,

Cal

Awesome!

Love 'em Gerald. Not too shabby on your air-brushing either!

Beautiful.  Nice job on the finishes.

Thank y'all for the comments. Now time to get back to the chess set and the wife has another project.

Gerald what can I say. You are putting lots of thought, no, thoughts into your little people. Give the other turners something to ponder.

Great work.
