October 1, 20169 yr Popular Post This is nearing the end of turning. Body of the angel is first hollowed , then turned. Angel in jig to drill mounting hole for wings. Hollowing did not go this high so usually not a big problem except had to make a jig to get the angle on the wings. The wings are turned to less than 3/16 in thickness. Notches are cut in wings and sanded. A ring is turned for the halo. This is progress so far. Still have to do carve the fronts and dye. The glue up and finish. By the way the wood is crepe myrtle from my yard.

October 1, 20169 yr Great photo tutorial, Gerald! Nice little jig for holding the lady while drilling, too.
October 1, 20169 yr Nice Gerald. I did some similar years ago but cut the wings on the scroll saw. I like the spindle sander idea real well. Much better control I bet.
October 3, 20169 yr Gerald, Using crepe myrtle is not something I would have thought of using. I always figured that it is a softer wood, but it has a beautiful color and you did a great job. One thing I would do differently is to turn a piece to fit up the bottom of the angel bottom to support the wood when you bore the holes for the wings. That would be to support the outer portion of the body. No charge! Steve, the old FlGatorwood Quote

In addition the hollow does not go all the way up to the drilled hole and therefore the upper part and head is supported in the jig. Have done about 50 this way and no casualties yet.
October 30, 20169 yr Author Popular Post Back for the finish. Used airbrush from HF to spray on colors ( Chestnut Stains) Then gold acrylic for the crowns. The basket is full of rings (halos) and wings. A secondary idea came along as a result of a failure in turning the angels and turned out to be Carolers with tophat. Bodies ready for stain and finish. Color is added and clear coat (lacquer deft). As a final touch a scarf for the Caroliers.
October 30, 20169 yr Author Thank y'all for the comments. Now time to get back to the chess set and the wife has another project.
October 31, 20169 yr Gerald what can I say. You are putting lots of thought, no, thoughts into your little people. Give the other turners something to ponder. Great work.
